There are 48 1/2 " dowels and 24 smaller dowels that will hold up to 72 bobbins on the Large Cone Thread Carousel. It is made from Red Oak and its base rotates (like a lazy Susan). To see a visual demo of the Thread Carousel in motion....click here :). That beautiful baby weighs just 8 pounds and stands 14 in. tall and 11 in. wide. This is a heirloom that can be passed from generation to generation.
Below is a photo of mine. I have the Easy Reach Thread Carousel. I love that I can see my threads and they are within easy reach of my sewing machine. It keeps my bobbins nice and orderly and I just spin it around when I want to see what colors of thread I have to go with a project.
Virginia has also designed a Notions Caddy that can be added to either Thread Carousels. I think it is very handy.

OH boy!! My spools of thread lay in the bottom of my sewing desk drawer - jumbled! And if the kids get into the drawer I can guarantee that the ends will be loose and when I pull out a spool along will come 1/2 dozen pieces of thread along with it. I'm really not that much of a slob, it's just that I don't have very much of an organization of my thread! This would be PERFECT!! And my bobbins would actually all be in one place instead of in my sewing machine, in the thread drawer and in my pattern drawer. Oh to dream..............

I keep all of mine in Art Bin totes, so it's nice and neat. I can easily move it, but it gets all jumbled up. I'd love to have this beautiful spindle to put my spools on.

ReplyDeleteOh Kelly, this is PRETTY! Currently I have some spool racks on my wall but I have more thread than racks. And my cones are all just in a clear plastic tub. Classy, eh? No, not at all. But if I won this carousel, I would put all my cones on it and then they would look so pretty on my sewing table.

My thread is stored in a messy handful of boxes... there are at least three boxes, and when I'm looking for thread sometimes it takes a while to look through them. There's also a spare drawer that gets some thread sometimes, so I have to look there too.
ReplyDeleteI have three regular racks. Not only do they not spin, they are loaded with straws to keep at least two or three spools on a single dowel. Of course I always need the spool in the bottom.

Kelly, all my thread is stored in IKEA food storage boxes. Ideal? No, but it does let me take it to workdays.

OMG I so need this! My thread is in drawers, plastic bags, a container, on my quilt table, on my serger, and generally every where! I could so be organized and get MORE quilting, piecing and sewing completed by being organized! I can't tell you how much time it takes me to find the thread I need--especially when I am chasing an unrolling spool across the floor! Thanks so much for the chance to become organized and quilt more efficiently!

ReplyDeleteIt takes a while to tell how I store my thread: some is in the little drawers of my sewing machine cabinet, some is in the little opening under my sewing machine, some is stacked next to my serger (and it rolls away every time I set up my serger) and some is in my antique sewing basket from my Grandmother. Then there are the wooden spools that I have displayed on a shelf over my sewing machine. Whew!
ReplyDeleteI would love to have a large cone thread caddie. At present my threads are stored in match box plastic storage containers and I have just starting acquiring large cones of thread and I am keeping them in a large ziplock bag.

I keep my thread in a drawer, however, being that I love oak this would be a wonderful addition to my sewing sanctuary! The window sill in this room happens to be made of oak also! No more messy thread drawer for me if I win this!
ReplyDeleteAside from all the great reasons I would LOVE to win this thread caddy, (i.e., match my oak trim throughout the house; solve thread organization problem; compact storage idea; save time by having everything right at hand; ingenious product idea!; classy; and functional), is the following fact: I just simply adore the visual impact of color and texture. This is true with threads, and my stacks of fabric. Sometimes I buy a fat quarter pack just because I like the color array! Maybe an odd thing to do, but I've grown to appreciate that this expenditure satisfies my visual senses and gives me great creative sparks as well as a feeling of calm.

I hate to admit that I store my thread in an old, brown,broken, plastic basket!! That beautiful wooden thread carousel would allow me to show off my quilting studio!!!

I keep my thread in tin metal containers or plastic containers from the Dollar store. The carousel is beautiful and would look great on the sewing table that my FIL made.

I have my threads in a couple of plastic boxes that are not really convenient - mostly because it is easy to lay stuff on top of them. I love th idea of the bobbin dowels so I can put the matching bobbins near the thread.

This is such a great idea. My thread is currently in Art*Bin boxes and it is tough to see what I have.

Thread that isn't assigned to a project is in my sewing box, which used to be my mother's from the '60s (I'm pretty sure some of that thread is her's from the '60s!). I am in desperate need of a way to keep it organized!

ReplyDeleteI'm OCD about my thread. They are together by brand, Madiera, Hemmingworth, Aurifil, DMC, Superior Threads..etc. Then they are organized by each manufacturer's color chart for easy reference and to make sure I don't buy ones I already have.
I don't think it would hold my 10,000 meter spools easily either..LOL.
But it would be nice for having the basic sewing threads nearby. Plus my cat would LOVE it. Does he count for an entry?
Oh! I just love this! I need it soooo badly! My threads are in a terrible shape, all jumbled up in an old shoebox. My bobbins, not so much, but it would be nice ot keep them together.

ReplyDeleteI keep my thread in one of those plastic bins that has drawers. My cone thread is on the bottom laying down and then I put a tray box on top of that for my spools of thread. My bobbins are also kept in that drawer in a clear plastic bobbin case. This drawer is right next to my sewing machine so that works great. What I don't like is having to move and rearrange everything to get at the thread I need.
Having a thread holder like the prize here would make me smile every time I sat down to sew which I try to do 1-2 times a week. :-)
Oh I could really use a thread carousel. I have some threads stored on organizers that I bought at Joann's on the wall, I have a flat small thread organizer but it isn't enough and my threads are always falling on the floor or getting tangled with other spools!

Like most people, by thread is in a drawer here and in a box there and in a bag there. I've recently redone my sewing space with a new cutting table and sewing machine table. This would look great beside my machine, being both functional and decorative.

I currently have my spools in plastic thread cases, which are stacked rather precariously on top of each other. Bobbins are either under the thread or in a mud beside my machine.

What a great product! I love that it spins so you can see all of your threads and that she even thought to add spots for bobbins. Currently my smaller (regular) spools of thread are in a vintage sewing box. The kind that expand outs and has a bunch of different layers (kind of like little drawers) This is great except I can't really see the colors of my threads because the spools stand up on end and all I see are the spool ends!) My large cones are in a Rubbermaid container.

My boyfriend bought a bag of variously colored threads on ebay and they're currently living in a plastic grocery bag in a drawer because we have no where else to put them. We can't even find the color that we're looking for because they're so disorganized!

What a beautiful piece that would look lovely in my sewing room! I have thread pretty much everywhere right now. I have some in those plastic boxes and some on one of those little wooden racks. This beauty would solve the problem of how to display and store the big cones easily and prettily.

Our thread is stored in too many places. Most is in a box in the closet. Some is in a sewing machine cabinet drawer. Some is just sitting around on tables in the bedrooms, living room, whatever. We moved 2 years ago and never got our thread organized.

I have a wall rack for small spools - but it is full - and my serger thread is packed into a plastic bin, which always seems to be under a lot of other bins, and always seems to have allowed the threads to tangle! I would love one of these thread organizers to put the thread right where I can see it and use it!

I only buy threads at the moment I need one for a project because I don't have storage for them and what is left over ends in a big plastic bag where in theory it should be found next time I need this colour. As I say, this is the theory, the practice on the other hand is a different story ...

ReplyDeleteOh isn't that a gorgeous thread holder! I have an old (like ooooooold) spool holder that used to be a display rack at a department store many, many moons ago. it's functional - but it's nowhere near as pretty as that carousel!

ReplyDeleteThis thread holder is very cool! I currently store my threads in a plastic tote in snack size zippy bags along with the bobbin if it has thread wound on it. Having my threads available in easy sight would save me so much time! I really like the area for storing much used additional supplies.

Right now I have several sewing boxes and two plastic thread bins with thread in them. I like the idea of having the thread in plain sight. It would make it easier to find the needed color that way. This is a very nice handy rack. I would give it a good home.

Oh neato!!! This is definitely something that I NEED! I have a short arm quilting machine and frame and have acquired quite a few spools and cones of thread for the machine. Right now, everything is inn 3 small baskets and a that is all stuffed into a drawer. What a mess!! I have to separate each cone from the rest when I want to use it and it usually ends up with a lot of thread cut off and thrown in the trash. HELP!!!

ReplyDeleteHA.....I'd be too embarrassed to send pictures of my thread-storage "system". Mine consists of: some thread in a sewing box (not bad, huh?) AND some on the spindles of my sewing table (also pretty good) and the rest are thrown in a plastic, lidded container or sitting around on the kitchen counter, the ironing board, and the end tables in the family room, and oh....LOOK...here is one by my computer desk, too. I have them scattered around so much that I never know if I have a color I need and I then buy duplicates. SO...I really need them all organized and in one place!

ReplyDeletePresently I have all my threads in two drawers of my index file size filing cabinet drawers. It is good for regular storage as you can see all the spools when you open the drawer, but it would be great to have all the spools I'm working with in one spot so I don't have them spread all over while I switch projects.(Regarding problems leaving comments, if they can't see the box at the end of comments they might have to switch into a different browser. Sometimes I have to switch to Internet Explorer instead of Mozilla Firefox) Hope this helps.

ReplyDeleteOh, I need about half a dozen of these for serger thread and wooly nylon and bigger spools of cotton piecing thread alone (in several of those plastic boxes with posts meant to hold them, but every time you wiggle a box, they all tip over). Then more of the other kind for the skinny spools, several dozens are in an old plastic "thread case" that folds open (garage sale item) and most of them then end up falling off the little spools, all kinds of misc. threads on three of those big peg board type jobs meant to hang on wall, but I have them leaning up one against the next, several spools in every bag I ever took to a workshop, an ice cream pail and a 9x15x5 vinyl tote (the newer threads I've gotten on sale, variagated cottons and rayons and stuff. And the "antique" threads (10 cents for "boilfast" cotton on wooden spools, etc.) in several smaller plastic cases, and the silk buttonhole threads (also old) in a little cardboard box, and . . . more in the cabinet drawers, under the sewing machine, whereever the cat might have batted them.
ReplyDeleteI am currently storing my threads in drawers out of the light. Recently, I have had a long counter put in my sewing space and I can already visualize this "piece of furniture" there. Lucky me if I win.
