Susan gave a great Schoolhouse presentation during Quilt Market in Houston this year. Her presentation included a slide show which made it difficult to take photos. I love this photo....except for the crease in the wall!!
"Vanity" is the name of this piece. It is 11 x 11 and was on the cover of Quilting Arts Magazine for April/May 2010. Check out Susan's blog. When you get there make sure you scroll down and look along the right side of the page. Many of her pieces are on the cover of Quilting Arts Magazine. Her work is absolutely beautiful and it is no surprise that she is featured on the cover of these magazines.
Here is Susan in my sewing area!! No she does not live next door.....I bought her Master Machine Quilting - Free Motion Quilting and Thread Sketching DVD. I have admired Susan's creations and having a personal class with Susan (via my laptop) is the only way to go - with my schedule. I buy DVD's because I'm a visual learner and really appreciate the flexibility of being able to watch over and over again. This is a little snippet from Susan's DVD.
I have never done any thread sketching in my life. I have been struggling with finishing a backpack that I made. I want a beautiful embellishment on the back of it and I finally found a pattern I like. Below is a photo of some practicing I did yesterday morning. I did some free motion quilting with invisible thread and then on one of them I used some small cording to make the veins pop up. It looked ok, but nothing special. I thought about doing some hand embroidery and beading but then I remembered Susan's DVD.
Look how much different the leaf looks with some thread sketching on it. Now I know Susan sketches on top of applique that she has done herself. But I did not find it written anywhere in the quilting police policies that says you can't sketch on top of patterns that someone else has already given you on the fabric!!! It was so much fun I was actually ticked off royal when I had to stop and go to an appointment. No joke.
Keep in mind this is my very first piece. It is intended only for practice and I have the one I will use on my backpack set aside until I feel like I've practiced with the colors of thread that I will end up using. I think there is a huge difference between this one and the one with quilting only.
Susan is an excellent teacher and the free motion quilting and thread sketching is tons of fun. Her DVD, Free-motion Stitching and Thread Sketching is an wonderful resource if you are wanting to learn either of these techniques or would like to build on your current skills. Susan was very clear in her explanations and the video captures each step Susan was teaching. She encourages exploration and gives her students lots of permission to "just do it." Typically I would be afraid to try something new and tell myself I can't do it-because I've seen so many incredible works of art and I know mine would look nothing near that quality. But....oh contraire....look how cool the veins on that leaf looks. They really pop and that was my first attempt.
Oh, what do we have here? Hmmmm...would that be Susan Brubaker Knapp's latest DVD? Why yes it is. Hmmm...wonder what I should do with it.....(contemplating now).....
Here is a sneak peak at Master Machine Stitching - Thread Sketching Beyond the Basics
I've decided to give it to one extremely lucky IHAN blog reader. I know, I can't believe I'm giving it away either. Thank you Susan for the pleasure of allowing me to give away a copy of your latest DVD, Master Machine Stitching- Thread Sketching Beyond the Basics, here on the IHAN blog!!
Lets see....something different this time.....hmmmmm....ok I got it.....go over to Susan's Website and look at the Art Quilts she has in her Gallery. Come back and leave a comment about the Quilt you like best and why.
Oh, one more thing, I forgot to mention Susan's Note Cards......
These note cards make great gifts. I love giving and receiving gifts that support quilt artists. I know you've been wracking your brain trying to find something that you know I will love....and use....so feel free to buy me one or 6 sets of these beautiful Note Cards. It's like giving two gifts at one time - you give to Susan and you give to me. Let the giving begin!!! :)
OK...back to the Giveaway
A winner will be drawn by random on Sunday Evening, November 21st. Feel free to tell your friends or post about this giveaway on your blog or facebook. You might want to become a follower of the IHAN blog so you will see the post about the winner, if you are not already. I am a follower of Susan's blog and I think you should strongly consider becoming a follower on her blog as well. She is a wonderful writer and I have always enjoyed her posts...I know you will too.
Sketching with Smiles,
Kelly
Wow Kelly, it's like she is painting with thread! Amazing work. And to pick one! I really like “Postcard from Glacier National Park: Avalanche Lake” It is so beautifully done, and looks like you are sitting by the lake. Susan is an incredible quilt artist. Thanks for offering her DVD as a giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI love Susan's work and would love to learn how to do it myself. That is something i plan on doing after the holidays, practice my free motion and working on art quilts. I love all of her work, that is a tough one. Each one has something and unique about it. I do love her spools though, love the simplicity and the realism with such simple stitching, would love to make things like that.
ReplyDeleteDebbie
Oh. My. Gravy... Pick me up from the floor...I just fainted from excitement. Pick me!!! I'd LOVE that video -- it's right up my alley!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite pieces are (in order): Vanity, Petri Dish Promenade, and Rivers of Red. To be honest, all of them are GORGEOUS!!!!
I can only hope to be able to do stuff like that...
Crossing fingers, toes, everything... Thanks for offering us a chance to win a DVD of our very own!
Cooped and Citrus Slices are my two favourites. I love all her work though - so talented. I have tried a bit of this type of work but would love to learn more.
ReplyDeleteI too love her work and love threadplay. Fun to see what you've been up to. Looks great.
ReplyDeleteI really love Susan's Freckles quilt, but they are all truly beautiful.
DVDs are a great way to take a class, and I love how you can go back anytime and repeat. Plus the closeup photography! Yumm, how I would love to win this DVD.

Nice post. Susan is terrific. Glad to find your blog.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I would really enjoy learning from this video. My favorite is Petri Dish Promenade.
ReplyDeleteI need all the help I can get!!! I have seen Susan's work, and I agree, it's beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteSusan does such amazing stitching! I love Maximum Cat Nap - it's so realistic. I would love to do a similar portrait of my Trudy ... Thank you for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteHow dare you Kelly! Not only do you send me to a different website then you ask me to make a decision! I love "prepared to take off" & "gossamer"it reminds me an old neighbor I used to have who collected butterflies. I love "Cooped" it reminds me of my white hens who have all since been eaten by coons. I love all the flowers that remind me of my mom and grandmother and I love the Family rules. Her work is amazing thank you for sharing. Did I mention I am amazed also with the yarn and thread too cool.
ReplyDeleteI love Susan Brubaker Knapp's work! I especially love all of her flower pieces and "Freckles" is a great one in her gallery. I can only dream and wish that I could ever make anything so beautiful! Just look at the detail and the tread painting on the petals--it's remarable, they truly come to life!
ReplyDeleteI follow Susan's blog it's a inspiration to see what she is up to all the time. Thank you for the chance to win the DVD, Sharonj.
Purple Phalaenopsis because purple is a favorite color and the detail is so lovely I can almost "smell" the flower. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI follow Susan's blog too and love what she posts! My favorite of hers is Candy Corn, hands down. Might even have to get that quilting arts calendar to have it in my house for a month! Thanks for your generosity!
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe you asked us to pick one of Susan's quilts and explain what we liked about it and why! I mean how can one choose between the sweetness of Communion and the sweet intensity of Bluest Eyes or the chuckle from House Rules or the snicker from Mr. Googley eyes in the Red-Eyed Tree Frog or the beauty of Gossamer compared to the beauty in Ready for Take Off? Please, it is just too hard...especially when we are all in the mad rush of finishing a thousand holiday projects. You do it for us...we have too much sewing and quilting to do!
ReplyDeleteSusan's work is phenomenal! I love how her work is progressing and am always amazed by what she does next!
ReplyDeleteGreat blog post!
You can't pick Lois she just fainted in the gravy......grin. This is an excellent giveaway, and I can't believe you aren't keeping it for yourself.
ReplyDeleteBillie
I would love to win the DVD for free motion.
ReplyDeleteKelly, being a 'farmer's daughter' I vote for 'Round Red Barn'. I just purchased this pattern from Susan and I'm going to give it a try. I love her work and am so happy for her successes. This DVD would be a big help!

Ooooh oooh oohh...PICK ME - PLEASE!!! I fell in love with that snippet of the video.
ReplyDeleteFavorite: Lepidoptera (feeds my love for BRIGHTS)
followed by Petri Dish (science lab and quilting -so cool)
and The Pauses Between Notes (A quilt based on a musical quote - blissful)
This might get me into applique finally. (not to mention making Art quilts that are NOT meant to be slept under!)
I have long been an admirer of Susan's work, and would have to pick "The Bluest Eye" as my favorite in her gallery. I remember it from when it was first published. I follow Susan's blog every day--wouldn't miss it! I will begin following yours, too! Thanks for the giveaway chance.
ReplyDeleteLove everything Susan does, but I must admit her chickens were unbelievable. I'm still wondering what she sold that piece for. It was so amazing! I'd love to own her/your dvd..I've just started trying to teach myself some thread painting on the art quilts I donate to AAQI and I'm sure I could use more than a few tips!!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful give-away! I love Susan's work - but how to pick just one? I guess I would pick "Seafoam" as I just love the dense, realistic texture.
ReplyDeleteKaren
I like Susan's "Petri Dish Promenade" the best. It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI love her Coleus leaves and the Apple... I study the apple every time I see it. I have BlueMoonRiver as a blog to visit on my blog too.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things on my wish list.... is her DVD(s)... and well maybe some time in the sewing room.
My favorite quilt in Susan Brubaker's gallery is A NEW BOX because it takes something so simple and makes it so beautiful and real with just thread. Amazing.
ReplyDeleteI have been following both yours and Susan's blog for some time now. I love Cooped the best.
ReplyDeleteJust returned from our first meeting of our newly formed Art Quilt Group
ReplyDeleteand to see Susan's videos is very inspiring.
I am having a hard time deciding which of her gallery quilts I like the best.
The thread spools are dear to all threat-lovers hearts, however, I am mesmerized by these kernels of candy corn.
I would truly love to win Susan's DVD.
Thanks, Kelly, for giving me this opportunity to win.
Hugs,
Gerry
Wow! Coleus, sunflower, round red barn, etc., etc.! They are all so colorful and gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWonderful, I been following Susan in the Creating the Hive. The book looks fantastic. Thanks for the giveaway. Hope I win - haha!
ReplyDeleteA New Box is my favorite. The crayons look so realistic. As a kid, I was so excited to open my new box of crayons at the beginning of each school year. I instantly thought of that when I saw the photo. The DVD looks really cool. It was interesting to see how Susan add dimension to the apple with the stitching. Thanks for hosting the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteHi Kelly!
ReplyDeleteSusan's art is FANTASTICAL!!! I love all of it; favorite right now (after being there for the past two hours) is Prepared for Flight ...I think; it is the beautiful black/white/red butterfly that also adorns her book!!! The flowers are so beautiful and Seaform is awesome! So much talent!!!! Anyhoo, I would love to win that DVD for my 55th birthday...(on Sat). Yes, I'm a Scorpio! Thanks Kelly!
hugz
Pam (also a follower) and I now follow Susan's blog...
What a wonderful giveaway! Thanks
ReplyDeleteLove all her work, The Bluest Eye, Dragonflies, Magic Beans. I am a follower of Susans blog, and I follow you too. I enjoy applique and would love to learn her technique. Thank you for the opportunity!
ReplyDeleteOh, I do love the quilts made by Susan. And I have seen one in real in Birmingham (UK). Wonderful colors. I would be thrilled by her "workshop". I hope I will be the lucky one. And sure I will come back to your blog. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteMarjolijn
Oh, how I'd love that! I even have time, since I sliced my finger with the rotary cutter the other night and can't sew! My favourite is 'Home Planet'; the texture is amazing and the whole thing seems to glow.
ReplyDeleteI have been following both your and Susan's blog for a while now. And I love reading both. I got introduced to Susan's work through Lepidotera and I still love the amazing colour and brightness. A second piece I love is the Petri Dish piece. I have seen it developing on the blog from the workshop where it started till the end and just loved following the whole process.
ReplyDeleteBoth this video and the one preceding it are on my christmas wishlist, so here is hoping Santa is coming early! :-)
Exciting give-away, please count me in. Love your post and decided to become a follower. I'm following Susan's blog too, for some time now.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to pick one of Susan's works but I guess if I had to....it would be Red Coleus. Second place goes to Cooped.
ReplyDeleteAudreyB
I follow Susan's blog and await each new entry to see what she is doing next. I happen to love her citrus slices. I did a watercolor painting years ago using translucent orange slices so the idea of making them with thread is intriguing to me. (What's not to love about each item in her gallery?!) Thanks for the chance to win her DVD!
ReplyDeleteLove Susan's work, have her first DVD, and follow her blog as well. If I had to really pick a favorite, it would be "The Bluest Eye" Thanks much for your generosity.
ReplyDeleteI've had Sue's blog in my google reader for a long time. I like all of Susan's quilts, but "Cooped" is one of my favorites. I really enjoyed her Quilting Arts article all about this quilt. I think the chicken wire is really cool and I love anything with hexagons!
ReplyDeleteLOVE her blog!! Been a follower for quite some time, sooooo much talent!! I love them all, but Sunflower and Wooden Spools are just two of my favorites. Her style just brings everything to life and adds so much texture to the piece! She is AMAZING!!
ReplyDeleteThanks to you and Susan for the giveaway!!
This is extremely hard to do! There are a few I really really like - I guess I'll have to use a random generator and pick...
ReplyDeleteCooped!
I love the chicken wire!
WOW! I can't believe we have to choose ONE...of these absolutely stunning works of art. Hmmmm..this is tough. I will have to go with 'Hibiscus'. It takes me back to Hawaii and vacations with family, whale watching, the ocean, the flowers everywhere, sunshine every day... I watched the sample video and was transfixed. I think we all have an inner muse that is bursting to escape...out of fear of failure we sometimes keep her in...this video could unlock the creativity waiting to be released....heck - it even made me open this Google account so I could post after months of putting it off!!! Thank you, Kelly, for introducing us to this artist and for the contest! If I don't win the DVD, I will just have to buy it...and at that price it is a STEAL! LOL
ReplyDeleteLOVE, LOVE, LOVE Susan's work! My fave is her big sunflower! I would love to have this dvd!
ReplyDeleteOh my, what a beautiful website..and the quilts are just beautiful and breathtaking...I love them all but what particularly caught my eye was "Autumn Bounty"..such detail and it looks 3D..like you are looking at real pumpkins...if I do not win this book I am definitely buying it...this is something that I have been struggling with and just what I need...thank you for the giveaway...
ReplyDeleteCommunion is my favourite piece in Susan's gallery. It brought back sweet memories of my daughter breastfeeding my now 4 year old granddaughter Ellanor.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win this DVD from a very talented artist.
Susan is amazing. I love the Postcard from Glacier National Park: Avalanche Lake. We went there this past summer.
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower of yours with google reader,
Susie

Susan's work is inspiring! I'd love to win her video!
ReplyDeleteI have read Susan's blog for awhile now and truly enjoy it. She has a wealth of knowledge and amazing skills. I really like her "Cooped" quilt right now as I would like to make some chicken wire or honeycomb quilting in the back of one of my quilts. I have studied this quilt to figure out how!!! Thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeleteWhile I do like Round Red Barn and the cute little tree frog, I am going to choose "Postcard from Glacier National Park: Avalanche Lake" as my favourite. I just love landscapes. BTW, I follow her.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the chance to win.
oh my goodness her work is fabulous. I love the chicken in the coop and the green tree frog. I'm adding your giveaway tot eh weekly link up at:

Susan's thread work is amazing, but I have to say that her "Maximum Cat Nap" got me! (I'm cat-less at the moment)

Everything Susan does is so inspiring!
ReplyDeleteHer leaf quilt, Rivers of Red, is my current favorite.
Thanks so much for the opportunity to win the DVD.

All of Susan's work is just beautiful! It is so hard to pick just one! I think I love the "Freckles" quilt! The detail is just amazing! I would love to learn how to do this with thread and fabric!
ReplyDeleteI do want to take time after the holidays to learn how to do free motion quilting, then maybe I will be able to do Susan's work with the excellent demenstrations on her DVD!
pojeda@embarqmail.com

Isn't Susan amazing! I think Wooden Spools is my favorite, it would look great hanging on my sewing room wall. All of her works are very beautiful. I would love to try her technique. Thank you for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteHer work is great, please count me in!
ReplyDeleteJust when I thought I picked a favorite, I saw another one! This one just stole my heart though: Postcard from Glacier National Park: Avalanche Lake. I've been there and would love to see that hanging on my wall! I would love to win this giveaway, thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteWow, this is a hard question, Kelly! They are all beautiful in their own way, but it's hard to pick just one. I would have to say the Magic Beans. I can relate to the subject matter. I personally know the smooth dents of the coffee bean, and I sneak one (or two) when I grind the coffee in the morning. Don't tell my dentist, but I love the gritty crunch :)
ReplyDeletensue21702 at gmail dot com
I'm torn between 'prepared for takeoff' and 'Red Coleus'! They both look real to me which is the best compliment I can give Susan!!
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous work! Makes me want to try my hand at thread painting again. For sentimental reasons, I like the A New Box of Crayons quilt the best. I gave my daughter a frig magnet that says "Every day is like a new box of crayons." Always reminds me of the childhood thrill of getting a new box .... now I have the adult thrill of getting new threads or new fabric!
ReplyDeleteI' love the Red-Eyed Tree Frog the best. Why? Because he makes me smile, just like your posts!
ReplyDeleteKelly, thanks for introducing me to Susan ... what wonderful work she produces!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I am amazed and delighted by most of the quilting in her gallery, Maximum Cat Nap is my favorite because it looks so realistic. And, yes, I love cats (shout out to Rocky and Daisy, my feline housemates).
I have been reading Susan's blog for awhile. I love the Hibiscus piece with its light and shadows. Of course it reminds me of Maui, warm, sunny, beautiful, and relaxing.
ReplyDeleteKelly I think your practice piece looks great. I went to Susans website, the crayons were awesome and I loved both butterflies. I would have to quit my day job to find time to devote to such artistic endeavors. Boy is that tempting.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate art quilts, though I am not an art quilter myself. But the techniques she shares would enhance any quilt. The notecards are lovely and I can see why you covet them. I think that is my favorite thing of hers if I had to choose.
ReplyDeleteI have been following Susan's blog and love to see her quilts. I have to choose one? Okay, the hibiscus is my favourite but there are about 10 close seconds.
ReplyDeleteShe's a very talented lady and would love to see her dvd.
Thanks Kelly, for the chance.

How does she do it? They are so life-like. It has to be November leaves for me as I love Autumn colours. But the texture is so amazing too. I would really like to learn how to do this. Thanks Sue and Kelly for making this possible. Sam sdownes@oceanbroadband.net
ReplyDeleteWow! So hard to choose... Susan Brubaker Knapp's amazing Hibiscus gave my heart a lift. That has a special Ohio angel connection for me.
ReplyDeleteSo am I the first in the Waldo search?? I spotted Mrs. Rosemary over on Susan's end of October post with Sarah Vedeler at Quilt Market!
It must be true - No matter where you go, there you are!!
P.S. Check is almost in the mail.
I love Sussn's work - she is an awesome artist!! Makes what she does seem so easy. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I'd have to pick Petri Dish Promenade as my favorite right now.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to own her DVD - will today be my lucky day?
I really really love susans quilt cooped, maybe it is because I will be building a chicken coop this winter and want chickens! I would love to win this video as learning thread painting is my next new technique.
ReplyDeletethank you for the give away!
I read Susan's blog and thought I liked her floral quilts. Then I went to her site and found Citrus Slices. Wow, I love the colors and the realistic look she acheived. Thank you for this great give-away. I would love to win it. Take care and God bless, Cory
ReplyDeleteI have been reading Susan's blog for quite a long time and find it so inspiring. My favorites are Freckles and one of a giant hibiscus. She did such a beautiful job of explaining on her blog how she painted the fabric and then thread painted. She is so generous to share this technique. I would love to have the DVD and learn more.
ReplyDeleteJust one? The Bluest Eye, then. Thanks for the giveaway - practice practice practice!!
ReplyDeleteHard to choose but there is something about seafoam that grabs my attention. It captures the feeling of its name. The butterfly is also wonderful in the work on the cover of her latest CD. I too am ready to take flight as I look at it
ReplyDeleteI like her "In a Box" quilt. I've always loved getting a new box of crayons each year. Thanks for the giveaway. I am trying to learn how to machine quilt. I would love to have this dvd.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kelly for the chance. I've been following Susan for awhile now, but I haven't checked her blog lately. Thanks for reminding me, her work is inspiring. I love "Cooped", the chicken wire is fantastic. I've seen quilts quilted with chicken wire before, but it looks like this is free hand. Again thank you..
ReplyDeleteI like the Red Barn. Also the citrus makes me thirsty!! The barn, because I grew up in the country and those red barns were everywhere (along with tons of butterflies!!)
ReplyDeleteOh wow....great job...so informative...something else I will have to tackle...just love it!
ReplyDeleteI am one of your loyal followers and love to see what you have up your sleeve to share with us. Well, you did it agian, a great book to share with the lucky winner. Thread art is one thing I so want to learn, but, I can't even draw a stick person let a long sew one. lol Maybe this box is just want the Doc ordered.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
I found your blog from Susan's... looks like I have another blog to follow.
ReplyDeleteSeafoam won my heart. The purples and blues take your mind straight to the ocean, and her thread drawing is so free-flowing and graceful.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win her DVD and learn from such a fabulous artist!
Thanks!
Sherry
Would love to win this DVD! I have tried thread painting a couple of times and just loved it! I am sure this DVD would help me alot!

What amazing work, just beautiful. I love what you started with and it is looking really good. I haven't tried art quilts yet, but this would inspire me to. So many beautiful quilts in Susan's gallery. I loved Autumn Bounty, they appear so full of texture and depth. I want to win.
ReplyDeleteAll her quilts are pretty amazing. I really like the apple and the shading that was created with the thread and the Hibiscus is just beautiful! I could really use this dvd as I have a cutting flower garden quilt that will be ready for thread soon, and It will be my first try at thread painting. It would be nice to get some instruction from someone who knows what they are doing!
ReplyDeleteI love her work, so amazing! I have discovered that mini quilts and mug rugs are great to practise new free motion ideas on, and thread painting might be fun on one too! Thanks for the inspiration and sharing! - Mary, The Curious Quilter
ReplyDeleteI love love love Susan's work and my favorite would be Purple Phalaenopsis. Susan just makes these orchids pop.
ReplyDeleteOh, Freckles! I've seen it somewhere, and feel in love immediately! I love her work.
ReplyDeleteWow! What a wonderful quilter. I love all of her quilts, especially the cat quilt. Thanks for highlighting this beautiful quilter.
ReplyDelete
