I say finally because this one has taken me some time to actually put my mind to getting those borders on.
You may recall this post (click here) where I showed Mary Jane's last quilt. It was a Pennsylvania Block Quilt and she titled it "Coming Home." My girlfriends in PA did a block exchange and I wasn't able to participate but one of the gals, Eleanor, shared a set of blocks with me. I put them together but then I put the top on a shelf. The more I sewed the sadder I got....I missed my girlfriend and the grief wouldn't seem to ease.
I put her picture on her machine and now we sew together and chat :) She encourages me to finish my projects just like she always did and I'm feeling a little better these days.
The snow continues to fall and I tried to capture how beautiful it is when it is all white outside....
This was last evening and you can't really see all the snow falling....but it was coming down again.
I saw someone on a neighboring street that looked like they were stuck at the entrance of their driveway so I backed up and inquired. Sure enough....they had driven into a snow bank and couldn't get out. I hopped out of my car and shoveled the bank and then pushed their car and they were able to get up their driveway. Come to find out the man was in a car accident a few weeks back and has an injury and he couldn't help his wife....so glad I stopped. He said there wasn't much the doctors could do for him. This morning I was thinking....it is always best to call a quilter when in need....right? RIGHT! I made him this:

I found a new way to sew with Mary Jane.....

No, it isn't a pillow....but it looks like one....giggles
It is a 7 x 10 rice bag with some lavender inside to microwave and put on his back. Maybe it will help....if not....kindness always makes people feel better.
Snowy Smiles,

Love the picture of your dear friend on the machine. What an inspired idea. Love the quilt, too. Haven't done one of these, but its one I do want to do. Beautiful winter picture. Yes, kindness does always make people feel better & you are so good at it. May you have a blessed day.
ReplyDeleteQuilters are good at picking up the pieces of just about any situation and trying to put everything back together. I say that because of your kindness to the neighbor. I'm in NW Ohio and we have been having plenty of snow. I just finished cleaning out my driveway with the snow thrower, it took 2 hours. Your friend's picture on the sewing machine is a good idea. Bless your heart, to have lost a good friend. I know the sadness and grief, I lost my husband 2 years ago last month. Some days are like that and I pray a lot for strength. Your friend would have loved that you are sewing and go ahead and talk to her all you want. I'm sure she is smiling down from above and listening to every word.
ReplyDeleteSusanne :)
How thoughtful of you to stop to help your neighbor, stuck in the snow. And then to make them the rice & lavender heat pack. I hope it works, but I too believe that the kindness will help the pain. Bless you, as you truly are an angel on earth.

Your are such a good neighbor and friend! I have a picture of my late BFF, and I love to look at it and remember what a very good friend she was to me. It's been 10 years since she left, and I still miss her visits and calls.
ReplyDeleteYou are so sweet! That man must have been speechless by your kindness. What a wonderful thing to do for someone. I am glad you found a way to sew with your friend again. Giving your grief time is the only thing to do. Sending you warm thoughts and strength.

ReplyDeleteYup, that's my girlfriend...patching up the world and spreading her love & joy to everyone in her path and then some. Sure wish they'd figure out a way to clone your spirit! You make the world a brighter and more wonderful place just by your being! Truly blessed to have you in my life. :)
ReplyDeleteOh darling girl it's just beautiful - and how lovely that you could put Mary Jane's pic on your machine, what an ingenious way to honor and sew with your friend. Kelly, you have the biggest heart of anyone I know - what a splendid gift for that man.
ReplyDeleteYou are just the best! What a nice story - so glad that you were able to help and you know they will love the rice bag (what is not to love about a nice, warm rice bag?). Your quilt looks so great - just love that pattern - you could use lots of scraps with that one. Glad that Mary Jane is helping you sew - what a great idea to put her picture on your machine. Hugs to you!
ReplyDeleteBless you and your Kind Heart, for stopping, for shovelling and for pushing, and for creating something hem I'll always treasure! Yes, kindness goes a long way with healing! I am glad your friends is with you while you sew! Take care Leslie
ReplyDeleteI have the picture of my friend who passed away pinned on my design wall and when I'm in my sewing room she overlooks what I'm working on and when I get stuck ask for her help and it usually works out. How kind of you to help out and make the heating pad.
