Is everyone having fun on the Famore Cutlery Blog Hop? I sure hope you get to visit each of the 5 blogs and leave a comment for your chance to win ! Tomorrow is my day....so you know I'll be up late writing that post.
Do you recognize this guy?
I know many of you know exactly who he is....and I'm telling you I'm feeling more and more akin to Uncle Martin every day. I now have an Apple I-Phone 4 (as if I know what the 4 relates to...it might as well be 4000) and I'm working on accepting the change from my "old" phone. I guess this is just another "sign of the times" where old folks like me have to work hard to get their old mouse traps to work again. For 2 days I didn't know how to answer the phone...that's pretty bad. I have only today realized this gizmo is not a phone...it is like an I-Pad with a phone in it. That's sort of like riding a bike with jet propellers on it.
So any of you have one of these gizmos...and if you do....can you clue me in to what aps a person should/might need? Aps, in my vocabulary means appetizers....obviously I waited tables for years while in college. Now an Ap is a virtual piece of air that you pay for and expect it to do things for you that you couldn't do with a piece of paper and pencil? I guess I'll be finding out.
On to Quilty Related Subjects :)
I have a big stack of books here on my desk to review and give away. Today I've chosen two books that have been published by Clotilde. The first is, "Learn to MAKE A QUILT from start to finish" by Carolyn S. Vagts.
Learning to MAKE A QUILT from start to finish is such a "modern" book ...Carolyn even recommends using Wonder Clips. You know my eyes were locked on that page...I love my Wonder Clips and if you have not tried them yet....well....I'm thinking it is time you did. Everyone I know who has tried them has loved them. They order 10 then re-order the 50 pack....they are sort of like Lays Potato Chips...one (10) just won't do...ya want more.
The next book is GARDEN PARTY Stitchery by Pearl Louise Krush.
If you have never done Redwork...there are basic instructions in the front of the book.
I really like both of these books a great deal....however, I also want to share them with two of my blog followers. So, if you would like to win one of these wonderful books, leave a comment on this post telling me which book you would like to win and why. I'll let the "Evil Mr Random Number Generator" select two winners, one for each book, on Monday, Jan. 13th.
Smiles,
Kelly

If I had PhotoShop and knew how to use it, I would put a propeller on this jobbie.

I know most of you don't want nor need a book on Learning to Make A Quilt....however....this isn't just any beginners book! Learn To MAKE A QUILT from start to finish is an excellent reference book for new and experienced quilters. Carolyn covers patterns and fabric selections, notions, how to use a rotary cutter (properly...lol) construction AND documenting your quilt. I don't think there is anything she left out. This book would also make an excellent gift to anyone you wanted to inspire to begin quilting.
Carolyn has used lots of great photos and her explanations are clear and I can understand them...which says a lot!

The next book is GARDEN PARTY Stitchery by Pearl Louise Krush.
Pearl has included 27 Redwork designs and that are featured in 7 projects including, Floral Bouquet Wall quilt, Garden Party Sampler, Set of 7 Seed Packet Hand Towels, Good Morning Sunshine Pillow and Wall Quilt, Bouquet in a Jar Table Runner and Place Mats.
GARDEN PARTY Stitchery has all the individual patterns that can be used in the projects Pearl has included or in any project you like. The designs are cheerful and fun. One of my favorites is Good Morning Sunshine....it a pattern for a wall quilt but I'd love to see this design on place mats for breakfast. Wouldn't you like to sit down to the breakfast table with a place mat that read, Good Morning Sunshine? I know I would. If you have never done Redwork...there are basic instructions in the front of the book.

I hear you about the iphone. I have an iphone 3 and I am getting used to it. My sis has one too and between her and my 5 year old grandson, they are teaching me to use it. Most of the aps I have so far are games. So I'm no help there. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win the 'learn to make a quilt book' It would be a wonderful reference work! Interestin about the wonder clips, I saw them advertised in the last two weeks and wondered, just how are they wonderful?
ReplyDeleteHi I don't have an iphone, I have enough trouble with my old mobile phone. LOL.
ReplyDeleteI would just love the Garden Party stitchery book. Apart from hand piecing blocks for quilts, I am so hooked on stitcheries and like to keep some by my chair to work on when I'm watching TV with my hubby. Thanks for such a lovely giveaway. Sandy. :)
I would love to win the Garden Party book. I have been fascinated by red work for a long time, but I have never taken the time to find patterns to make a project. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI would rather the 1st one because I'm just starting my 1st ever quilt this winter and need to learn the basics!
ReplyDeleteGarden Party Stitchery would be perfect for me. Redwork is one of my learn to dos for 2012. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI got a Kobo reader from the kids for Christmas and I just spent an afternoon setting it up and since I love to read I think I might like it. I don't have a phone but have been thinking about I Pad or some kind of notebook by my machine. Not to bad for a 70 year old. I would love to win the Garden Party as I would love to learn Redwork.
ReplyDeleteI'd love the Garden Party Stitchery, I'm planning on having fun with Redwork this year! I just got an iPhone a few days ago...oh my, I feel so out of my element! (I too, think of "app" as appetizer) I'll look forward to the responses.
ReplyDeleteTHESE ARE NEAT GIVEAWAYS!
ReplyDeleteI'D CHOOSE GARDEN PARTY STITCHERY AS I LOVE ALL REDWORK! THANKS FOR SHARING!
Hi Kelly! I'm still here:) Thanks for thinking of me lately I really appreicate it! I would love the garden party! Who would not want to party in the garden and then stitch it all together! Hope all is well for you:) Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your new phone. The books look very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI would actually love to have Learn to MAKE A QUILT from start to finish. I was looking at it online just the other day. I hate when there are no previews for books on amazon. I like to look at what's inside before I buy. I wish there were book stores around here, but there aren't! Grrr. Anyway, I'm a newbie quilter who's never made a quilt before but I'm scouring the internet and books to get up the courage. It's something I've wanted to do for years. This book might be just what I needed!
ReplyDeleteI'd like the Learn to Make a Quilt. I'm still a newbie and have lots to learn!
ReplyDeleteI think that both books look very interesting --- each for different reasons! So... I just can't choose! :-) My choice is ... EITHER! :-) Thank you for the chance to win!! :-)
ReplyDeleteI would love to win the book Learn to make a quilt for my sister who is just learning. When I come over to visit her for the holidays I spend lots of time trying to show her how to do quilting things. She is just about to finish her first small lap quilt. She would be over the moon if I won this for her. I love your blog. Lyn Blackburn
ReplyDeleteNone of them, lol. I have enough to keep me busy these days so just leaving a comment. I got an ipad this year, really need a new power book at this point, wish he had waited like I said;) I got sketch book pro for mine, nice drawing program. I also got dragon speak so I can talk and let the computer write it, fun when I am too lazy to type;)
ReplyDeleteDebbie
Both books look great however the Learn to Make a Quilt would be wonderful to win. It would be nice to have a reference book with lots of info in one place. No quilt courses where I live so need to learn through books.
ReplyDeleteMy husband has a smart phone, my son has a smart phone, my new daughter-in-love has a smart phone - but I don't. They talk about apps all the time.
ReplyDeleteMost of the apps they have are for fun- like one app makes your phone into a level.
Useful apps might be - to turn your phone into a "flash light" - but watch out it will consume your battery quickly probably. One app allows you to take a picture of a bar code and it will tell you how much that item will cost and where it is. One for calories and counting them / fat / protein / carbs / etc.
I'll even bet there is a quilting app of some kind (which they have no use for) ...
Good luck - I'd search the net for free smart phone apps or something like that.
I just asked my husband what is the app he uses most often and he said : he just uses them when he needs them (yes, he's a man)... Shazaam - when you hear a song playing and you don't know what it is - you can let Shazaam hear it and it will automatically go onto the internet and find the title and artist... Urban Spoon - kind of like a slot machine - when you don't know what you want to eat (eat out) it will get your coordinates and give you a rolling list of restaurants close by.
I love the Garden book :0

Hey! Don't need another book - don't have enough time to read the ones I have, even if they are as good as all that! :) Just dropping by to say hi & let you know I'm still kickin! Kickin what? Well, what do you think? Yup, kickin butt! Working on that Cali King (36 or 42 embroideries, Attic Window sashing), and just took on a monster curtain job. Whew. OH, and got a shot, so I can bend over, starting TODAY! whooohoooo! Hoping Mr. McSteamy is all recovered from his "vacation." You know, the one where he hurt his back....
ReplyDeleteMy Arthur Rictic hands aren't doing embroidery anymore, so I'm in for the Quilting Book! And I promise to read it start to finish.
ReplyDeleteI would love to win the Learn to MAKE A QUILT from start to finish" by Carolyn S. Vagts...I'm very new to quilting so anything that guides me on the right path is great.
ReplyDeleteHi Kelly and thanks for making this possible. I would like the "Learn to make a quilt" book because my daughter has just become interested in quilting and I would like to give it to her. I'm sure I can also learn something from the book. Kind regards Sam
ReplyDeleteThe books look wonderful. I have only made some quilts from left over materials (just squares pieced together) and then I did a log Cabin one. It was so inspiring to see a pattern and do something. You pick :) Thanks for the chance for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI still have one of the old cell phones that makes calls and I don't even have text. I know I need to upgrade but I had a hard time going to a cell phone to begin with. Most of the time it is off and my kids ask me why I even bother. Both of those books look great. I would like to give redwork a try one of these days but can't find my round tuit;)
ReplyDeleteThe books look wonderful! Good luck with your phone-i traded mine back in b/c I didn't want all the bells and whistles...I know...I went backward...
ReplyDeleteSo I take it that was Monday the 16th (since the 13th was ...Friday! hehe! I would love the first how to book, I just began quilting in March and still have a lot to learn, however I have ALWAYS wanted to try red work! They are both great choices! Thanks for the giveaway!
