Kelly, I have never taken a class on making a quilts, but I did make 8 log cabin quilts for Christmas 20 years ago. Think everyone has them yet and have even seen them displayed when they didn't know I was coming over to their homes, so I guess they liked them. I would love to win, so I can absorb some of the writers knowledge. Thanks for having this celebration give-a-way.
ReplyDeleteI took a quilt as you go table runner class a couple of years ago. It was a lot of fun! Just having the other ladies around and the comraderie was awesome. I would love to take more classes so I can learn other (easier, I'm sure) ways of doing things. This prize looks awesome! The workshop book alone is a fantastic prize!

ReplyDeleteOk. You ask for insights on favorite workshops. Really difficult to say which is my favorite, as I've had so many that have inspired, taught, built great friendships, and simply been fun. But one that comes to mind is one where we've had some beginner quilters, who were in a workshop a bit over their head...but they came thru and with help, they have now completed their quilt...my friend just shipped her first baby quilt to her first grandson who is now 4 (maybe 5) years old. So..LOL, this is probably one of the longest workshops ever as we've continued to help her work on her project. And she did an excellent job. {I'll send photos}.

ReplyDeleteI'm partially homebound, so going OUT to a class is not doable; however, I've taken many classes online, mostly at Quilt University.
ReplyDeleteThe one I really remember was a class on design - I worked thru the class and made a piece that I liked well enuf to donate to an Alzheimer's Auction out in Seattle where my sister lives. That piece sold for $400. *S* I can't remember selling any other finished class project.
Like others, I've never been to a Workshop or a class, but please don't hold that against me! I'd sure like to attend a few someday. Thanks to your sponsors for such lovely prizes!
ReplyDeleteI have taken classes with Carol Doak, Harriet Hargrave, Sue Nicholas, Mickey Lawlor (SKYDYES), Betty Pillsbury, Ellen Eddy, Nancy Johnson Sebro, Judith Montana Baker, and also from local quilters at quilt shops. Each class was fun, I learned a lot, met great people, and learn a new technique or how to resolve an quilting issue.

Well, I've only taken one quilt class - I went three times before my babysitting fell through. . . it was really fun. I think I was the youngest in the class by about 30 years, they all knew each other and it was fun to hear all the gossip about EVERYONE in my city from the last 50 years or so :)

ReplyDeleteMy favorite workshop was with Harriet Hargrave, about 10 years back. Although her specialty is machine quilting we only touched upon that and mostly did some machine applique. At the end of the class I purchased a $3,000 Bernina machine because I realized the one I had didn't have any good features! Since I sew almost everyday, it's the best investment I ever made. I'm disappointed about Rob, however my mailman is pretty cute and I'd be glad to accept a prize from him! Lynne

I have never taken a quilt class or workshop. My grandma taught me to sew when I was young, but even that was not quilting, but clothes. I made my first quilt when my kids were young and I wanted but could not afford designer bed covers. I just went online and found a paper piecing pattern, read the instructions, and got to it!

ReplyDeleteI have only taken one quilt class -taught by a friend - at a local shop. I made a great table runner in the class. We were learning paper piecing but we also learned a bit about quilt construction in the "putting it together" portion.
ReplyDeleteI have never been to a workshop, class or retreat for quilting. I have learned from books and the internet and of course just watching my mother as she made her quilts.
ReplyDeleteI love taking classes whenever I am able to. Each class that I have taken has been wonderful! Currently I am enjoying the classes on blocks of the month and Party with Patrick. I have also been attending something called Yankee Quilter University, which are free classes offering a new technique or theme--absolutely great! Here I have just been introduced to ribbon applique! I am currently working on an amaryllis design and am loving it! I find classes a great place for new learner; both from other students and the teacher and a fantastic social experience--always entertaining!

ReplyDeleteAnother great giveaway Kelly! My favorite workshop was an Arashi Shibori class with Darren Pittman. It was so exciting to see the fabrics as they were unrolled from the PVC pipe. I came home with several pieces of hand dyed fabric.
ReplyDeleteI am a self-taught quilter, having watched my grandmother hand-piece and hand-quilt during the 1960's. It was so unfortunate that she passed away before I got interested in quilting - oh the things I could have learned from her! So two weeks ago I took a class from our local quilt shop. It was pretty much a beginner's class. I had previously purchased a zazzy quilt kit for Kaffe Fassett's Cinnamon & Ginger quilt. I had it sitting in my sewing room for two months and every time I went to start on it, I hit a brick wall for fear of choosing the 'wrong' fabric design to go with the adjacent designs. Silly me. The best thing I learned from this one-day class was to just jump in and get my feet wet. And probably more importantly, not to be a true perfectionist when quilting. I still am adamant about straight lines and everything matching, but I am going easier on myself now, and am more productive. I will snap a photo and send it to you next!

My favorite class was a while ago, but it was on sewing winter wear. Since I'm from MN, this is an essential. I went on to sew all of my kids, snowsuits, winter coats, hats, hunting clothes, cross-country ski wear etc. I made a winter jacket for my Day and he wore it for over 30 years (he passed away two months ago). Without this class, I would never have started this avenue of my sewing.

ReplyDeleteThe quilt guild I belonged to previously had Sue Nickels do a workshop on machine applique several years ago. Sue is a lovely person and the class was very good!
This is such a wonderful prize! My favorite class experience was when I learned how to make X-Block quilts. It was a huge class but the teacher had made the instructions so simple and gave each of us the individual attention we needed. I was so impressed that now I take classes pretty much exclusively from her! I'm a very visual learner and she is the best. It was a really fun quilt to make too. Wish me luck on winning this, lol!

My favorite quilt "retreat" was when 2 friends and myself went to Patchwork Garden. You go for hours or days. She lets you use her HQ16s to longarm your quilts (after lessons from the owner). We went on Thursday and came home Saturday. I got 2 quilts done for my granddaughter's. My friends were able to accomplish more. Even got to use the computerized machine!

ReplyDeleteOK, now for confession time: I have never taken a class or attended a workshop--until I was asked to teach one. I have taught several small classes and done a guild presentation locally. I would really like to develop my skills in this area and a book like this from experts would really help.
Yes, I would like to attend a class someday, but it is probably a ways off. In the meantime, books and the internet are my teachers.
My fave workshop was shave cream dying. It was great having the mess of cream, expensive dyes, rulers, stirrers and mucky fabric THERE and not at MY house! My dyed fabric squares turned out gorgeous, and one of these days, I plan on using them in a quilt!

What a fabulous parcel of notions and quilting books! My favorite class was a 'faux' curved piecing class. We made a quilt called 'Dance of the Dragonflies.' I'll e-mail a picture. It was so fun to see everyone's fabric selections and have a chance to socialize with quilters of all ages.

My favorite workshop I have attended was the Postcard workshops my guild has had for the last two years. We make fabric postcards (the guild supplies the peltex and bristol paper) and the guild then sells the postcards at our quilt show as a fundraiser. I love all the ideas that floaat around and love making the postcards.

I learn new ideas, get to spend some time with friends and help our guild out.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite quilt class was a beginner's quilting class. What made it so great was that 4 of us friends were taking it together. We each have different styles and tests and it was inspiring to see the same project turn out differently for each of us. Plus it was agreat time to connect weekly with my girlies. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great package of goodies. One of my favorite workshops was on a quilting cruise tha I took with 7 of my "wacky" girlfriends. We learned about dying fabrics and how to use portions of the fabric; beading and other embellishments and we were introduced to the Janome 11000 and somehow, in all that confusion, I bought one....LOL

My favorite workshop was one led by Jinny Beyer back in the 1980's. It was on using border fabric to make kalidescope type blocks, and since I love geometry, it was a real winner with a wonderful and patient teacher.

ReplyDeleteI have only taken 2 quilt classes, one on line and one traditional. The first was a traditional beginner's machine quilting class. I didn't think I would learn anythign when I signed up but guess what?! I learned I was threading my machine WRONG!! It was embarrassing and slightly humbling! LOL
ReplyDeleteThe second class I took a was an online class on designing the "quilting" part of the quilt. I can now do feathers and lots of other cool designs and can even think outside of the quilting box!
I am a HUGE fan of Bonnie Blue Quilt Patterns. I would love to win another. All of their quilts are favorites as I LOVE reproduction prints.

I enjoy going to workshops of all kinds. You never know when you'll pick up an interesting tip. There is so many useful tips for many things. I enjoy applique' classes. I think one of my favorites would be with Elly Sienkevich? She is so delightful and full of knowledge. You could tell she had done alot of preparing and her samples were awesome. I would say if you get a chance to take a class with her, you definately would not be disappointed!

I live a long way from any shops and workshops so when I went to a quilt show last year I went to a workshop in every time slot and just soaked all the information up at every chance, I learnt so much about machine embroidery and bag making too that now all I need is the time.

ReplyDeleteI take a class two Sunday's a month at my future mother-in-law's house. She has been sewing in all manners for many years. We have made banners for the Christmas program at church, a new pair of jammy pants, and my very favorite a Batik robe - FLOOR LENGTH :) Which for this 5'10" girl is miraculous ;) She's an awesome teacher!

Dear IHAN, I have yet to go to a quilting workshop or retreat. I have only been quilting for a little over a year. (machine quilting) But have been hand sewing and quilting for several years - but only LITTLE quilts! LOL I sit and stitch every night, and LOVE my Roxanne needles!! I just recently attempted sewing circles on the machine into a quilt. That was an experience! LOL!! I am happy to say that I am a book learner (and blog learner now!) and I know this circle book will teach me things about sewing curves that none of my other books touch on! (scoured them all already last month! lol)

I knew right away how to respond to this post! My favorite workshop was a two-day free motion class sponsored by a quilt shop together with a sewing machine shop. They brought in new Bernina Aurora 440 QE machines for us to use if we wanted to, and that was an opportunity I couldn't pass up! We had a blast, and I fell in love with the machine.
ReplyDeleteWe learned so much in those two days--they worked our tails off. And the machine I was sewing on... of course it came home with me! I think deep down I knew I'd end up with a new machine before I ever went to the first day of class, and it's a purchase I haven't regretted!

My favorite workshop is really a retreat. It is held each March at the Watson Retreat in Campbell NY and sponsored by the Mountain Laurel Qilting Guild. A great weekend of quilting friendship which also includes a massage therapist doing a shoulder massage.

ReplyDeleteI have never taken a class. My inspiration is my great grandmother. She was still hand piecing tops into her 80s. I have been able to hand quilt several of her tops. My fingers have glided across the very seams she hand sewed together. Love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a marvelous selection - a dream to win! My most favourite workshop was a midweek retreat a year ago with lots of workshops and the most pleasant part was English paper piecing that I did there for the first time. I am now a member of the Great Hexagon Quilt Along - love it!
ReplyDeleteThere aren't a lot of local classes, but I did one several years ago that made a double-sided mini quilt with "windows" of varying fabrics, textiles, thread painting etc. It was really a lot of fun and I learned about working with new things like silk organza in quilts!

ReplyDeleteI went to a quilt class last month and it was so much fun. I learned how to make blocks similar to drunkards paths. The pattern was called Circle and Spin. I didn't think sewing curved pieces could be so easy.

Mo Shepard is owner of Quilting with Mo a teaching studio.What a great lady. She has this cute studio with a HUGE design wall. She pushes is to explore and be creative. I have learned it is ok to not follow that pattern exactally and also add a touch of me to each project.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite Quilt Workshop/class was last August in Indianapolis with Bonnie Hunter! I have friends that I stayed with since I live out of state and this made even the non class time great! Bonnie is an awesome teacher and very supportive and encouraging with all of her students. It was a great experience and worth every minute away from home!!!
My favorite workshop was with the late Doreen Speckman. I laughed so much I had to be careful not to stitch through my fingers. I learned a lot too!

ReplyDeleteOh, my...I have taken many good classes...both at my local guild, my local quilt shop, and at large quilt shows and it is very hard to choose a favorite but I can tell you I had the most FUN at a class I took with Gyleen Fitzgerald...it was her tesselating stars pattern class and we had a great time! I would love to dig into that Quilter's Workshop book, though....and also I've never used Aurafil thread but heard it's great, so this would be a nice way to try it.
ReplyDeleteI took a class the very first time when I learned how to quilt. Back in the day when we used scissors and templates. The teacher introduced us to the Rotary and we all laughed and said how could this take the place of scissors! Duh!!! I have mostly taught beginners to quilt, which has been the bulk of my class experience. I am happy to say that they have all gone on to be much better quilters then I am :-)
ReplyDeleteI love taking workshops. My favorite was one I took with my sister. George and Virginia Siciliano's workshop was on foundation piecing very,very,very tiny pieces. His pattern, Bird of Paradise, was this particular workshop. He is talented and very funny. Lots of fun with this class.
ReplyDeleteIf a class has an "ah ha" moment, I feel it was worth the money. Normally the ah ha is a short cut, tool or technique that I did not know about prior to the class. The last class I took was for machine quilting, she had us pull the bobbin thread to the top then use a self-threading needle to bury the threads in the quilt...ah ha! No more knots.

ReplyDeleteI took a workshop by Marsha McCloskey. That was an amazing workshop on the Feathered Star. I learned so many tips and trips and spent the 2 days with my mother...she took the workshop, too. It was so much fun!
ReplyDeleteI was teaching a class on medallion quilt design and a student was frustrated with the triangle measurements.Her last border just wouldn't fit so before I could show her how to adjust the seams -- she sliced the quilt in half with her rotary cutter! Maybe she was in the wrong class (anger management. Thanks for the memory.
ReplyDeleteI made a garden trellis quilt at a quilt workshop and was able to finish most of it there. I gave it to my niece for a wedding present.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Quilt Workshop was taught by Carol Doak. Our Guild brought her in for one of our meetings and she had a workshop. I even let my daughter "skip" school to attend the workshop. Carol was a great instructor and everyone who attended has a great time!

Debby Brown teaches very creative ways to quilt for hand quilting, home machines and longarms. It was terrific fun watching all the ladies have their ahhhhh moments.
I have had fun learning from Carol Doak and Marti Michele in classes but that was even before digital cameras :0).

ReplyDeleteThe latest great workshop I took was last fall. Our guild had Bonnie Kucera from Nebraska give a workshop on her Scrapaholic quilt. She had lots of great ideas for using the scraps, trading to get a bigger variety and quick method to stitch the many triangle squares in the quilt.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite workshop is teaching hand-quilting: I love to see everyone go 'wow' over my Roxanne thimble and the beautiful shells on top of my needle cases. I quilt with nothing else, and I love sharing the my passion!
ReplyDeleteI am a hexagon junkie so my favorite would be a demonstration by Mary Anne Cicotelli at a NJ quilt show a few years ago. She demonstrated her terrific folded hexagon technique and I love it!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite class was learning Hand Applique. I grew up doing hand embroidery and cross stitch and feel most comfortable doing hand sewing, so hand applique is perfect for me. The teacher was very patient and had lots of tips that made the work go smoothly. I still use the freezer paper on top method that she taught 10 years ago.
ReplyDeleteI've taken some fun and interesting classes, the best was when 3 friends and I took a hand piecing class together. It was during the week and we all had such fun learning and working with the same fabric packs. It was unusual for all of us to be in the same place together. It was right before my birthday so I got a couple of gifts from the shop as an extra!

I've never taken an artistic class in my life. My last "class" was right before I got my science degree in college. I'm a duck out of water, too, since I live so far away from anywhere people would come to teach classes. Now if you want to know about some of my calculus class stories (grin). . .

ReplyDeleteI've done two workshops; one for a made over sweatshirt which was great fun and only an afternoon deal and hten a weekend retreat across the river into Canada at the Hilton there. We did a mystery; and being new to the guild and a fairly new quilter it was loads of fun! I didn't get up to any shenanigans with the other girls, but hubby came to visit me....hey...a hotel room! With six kids at home we made the best of it! blush!

ReplyDeleteAttended a workshop this Tuesday with David Taylor-- tremendous. I never care if I actually get the project done; it's the chance to listen and learn the secrets of the experts (well known or not so well known).
ReplyDeleteI'm also a book addict, 2nd place to the in-person experience as far as questions, but lasts longer.
One thing about any workshop or class -- you can learn as much or more sometimes from the person sitting next to you as from the instructor. We all have our little ways of doing things and if I knew everyone local's little tricks, I could write a book, make a million and go to all the classes I want!
David's workshop was on his hand applique technique. Interesting because he appliques everything (stuff that I've always pieced) and then machine quilts it all!!
My favorite quilt workshop was with Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville.com. She is so talented, knowledgeable and just plain caring. Loved all of her tips and tricks about scrappy quilt making.
