Welcome to The Edge Blog Hop with Pat Sloan and Friends

Good Morning Blog Hoppers!!!
(edited 9/27/10 9:45pm)

Welcome to the IHAN blog.  If this is your first time visiting, IHAN is short for I Have A Notion....my on-line Notions Store.  Here at the IHAN blog you will find lots of great information about the latest and greatest Notions, interesting people and  lots of giveaways (this is the third giveaway going on right now at IHAN).

Pat Sloan has helped Sulivan's design some really neat new rulers. I bet you already knew that though....and you are here to enter the big giveaway....a full set....YES....10 Cutting Edge Sharpening Rulers!!!!   I know how excited you must be so I'm going to give you a few minutes to catch your breath.....realx....get your heart beat and blood pressure under control.  While you are relaxing, I'm going to share a few details about my quilting life.....just don't get so relaxed that you fall asleep.

"Many Hands"
I consider this my first quilt because I took an official quilting class and this was my project. I chose the fabric for one simple reason, it had an elephant in the print, albeit very small, and I really like elephants. Each family member, living in my home at the time, was asked to choose a block pattern and then choose the placement of the fabrics. There were 6 of us and if we all still lived together that would make 8 now....make that 9....one is married. I did all the machine piecing and it was hand quilted by my very dear friend and amazing hand quilter, Mary Jane (IHAN's East Coast Director of Operations).
Choosing fabric ..... well....there is a little history to my issues with choosing fabric.  Several years ago I had signed up for a class to make a tote bag.  The gal who was teaching the class told us to get some "inspiration" fabric.  I asked her where she got hers and she told me the name of her local quilt shop.  I drove an hour on a Saturday to the quilt store and read the end of every bolt in that shop.  I could not find the word "Inspiration" on any of the bolt ends.   When the sales lady was free,  she asked if she could help and I asked where the "Inspiration" fabric was and she seemed puzzled.  I was soooooo frustrated.....all I wanted was the darn fabric and to go home.  I left empty handed and drove to a pay phone (remember those days?) I called the instructor and told her the shop no longer carried "Inspiration" fabric.  She laughed so long and hard I thought she might just start snorting.  Apparently "Inspiration" fabric is any fabric that inspires a person to create......OK....why didn't she just say that?  Thankfully I have no issues with choosing great Notions!!

How is your heart rate and blood pressure now?  If you are relaxed....I'll get on with the big giveaway!!

The Cutting Edge Sharpening Rulers are some darn cool rulers because they sharpen your rotary blade while you cut.  Neat ay?  I think so....and when you cut with them....they make a sound....the sound of the blade being sharpened....I was not expecting that and was pleasantly surprised.  Pat Sloan and Sulivans clearly put a great deal of time into designing these rulers.  Click here to learn more about all the details.  The Cutting Edge Sharpening  Rulers are available at local quilt stores, Pat Sloan's Quilt Shop, IHAN and I bet lots more places I don't even know about.

To win an entire set of The Cutting Edge Sharpening  Rulers you must leave a comment on all of the blogs (listed below)  that are participating in the Hop

Pat Sloan's Blog for the big Wrap Up

You will definitely need some nourishment while doing all this blog hopping.  I'm just glad you are not depending on me to provide it....because you may end up in the hospital.  My idea of nourishment generally includes a phone number, menu or a speaker box in a drive thru.  Mr. McSteamy cooks for the IHAN clan most of the time.  On Mr. McSteamy's birthday I do make him his favorite cake.  People have always asked for the recipe so I'm guessing you might like it better than the phone number to my local pizza parlor :)

Screwball Cake-Recipe (given to me by McSteamy's Mother)
3 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
Mix that all together in one bowl.  (Any bowl that will fit....no need to find an inspiration bowl!!)

In another bowl, mix together
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 teaspoons vinegar
2/3 cup oil

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix.  Then add 2 cups of water and keep mixing. The recipe says don't grease the pan.....I always spray the pans with Pam Cooking Spray but don't tell my mother-in-law ok?  Cook on 350 degrees in the oven for 1 hour.  Then you have a naked cake.  If you like your cake aka breakfast to be covered....take some cream cheese and mix in a ton of powdered sugar and vanilla....add a little milk or water if you must....and smear it all over the top.  If you see some pearly gates after the first bite......you know you followed the recipe correctly.

Don't forget to leave a comment on this post to be entered to win the 10 Cutting Edge Sharpening Rulers.  The winner will be announced on Pat Sloan's Blog.  Edit: To be eligible to win the grand prize you must leave a comment on this post and the same for the others who are hosting the hop-the links to their pages are above.  So hop everyday and leave your comments :)

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, IHAN will also choose a winner from the comments left on this post and that person will receive an autographed copy of Anita Grossman Solomon's book, Rotary Cutting Revolution, new one step cutting 8 quilt blocks.  After all, you've got to put your new rulers to work right?

Smiles,
Kelly

  4. Love your writing style! Thanks for the cake recipe - my daughter's allergic to milk and eggs and loves chocolate. Well try this right away for husbands B'day!

  5. I make a cake like yours too, except I just dump all the ingredients except the vinegar into the baking pan. After it is mixed, I stir in the vinegar and then put in the oven.

  11. That cake sounds like something my husband would like. Put cream cheese frosting on anything and he would eat it. I also love your first quilt and your story of the "inspiration" fabric. Pat was very nice to give us a "spit warning"!

  14. Wow Kelly these rulers sound like a fantastic idea! Love that they sharpen your rotary blades. Thanks for the "inspiration"!

    ReplyDelete
  15. What a BRILL idea! Rulers that sharpen your rotary cutter. I need the full set or at least a 9.5 square or larger AND a 6 by 24 or larger!!! Since those are the two I use the most.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Nice blog. Printed out the recipe. Thanks!!!! I want those rulers!!! LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  17. This is my first time visiting and reading your blog. Very informative. Love your stories and will try the recipe too! Please enter my name in the drawing for the IHAN and the book.

  18. Okay, for starters, I am impressed with your first quilt! Also, your cake sounds very good and is going to be put on my list of things to try. I love trying new recipes.

  19. Sounds very similar the my crazy chocolate cake which I just made last night, thanks for reminding me I need to go get cake for breakfast.

    Those rulers sound awesome.

LoL! love your story on inspiration fabric. My MIL loves elephants and has quite the collection.

  20. I would so love a 'Consumer Reports' review of sewing notions! These rulers seem ideal; they'll put all those orbital sharpeners out of business if they indeed keep an edge sharp. I'm soooo willing to try! My orbital has been a disappointment; and at $30 a BIG disappointment...

    ReplyDelete
  21. I liked your story of the inspiration fabric very much. It could be me. These rulers seems a great invention to me.

    ReplyDelete
  22. These rulers look so interesting. I can't wait to see them in my quilt shop. I hope they open one up for us to try!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks for the morning laughs. I haven't had my breakfast yet (aka cake) so I might have to try that recipe. I'll find my "inspiration" apron and give it a go.

Great idea with the rulers that sharpen as you cut. Now if they can just make the ones that do the laundry as you cut.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I enjoy your blog. I really need those rulers and want them too!

    ReplyDelete
  25. The rulers sound interesting, since I collect rulers I just may have to look deeper into them.
I feel like your talking about me when it came to choosing fabric. Not good at that takes hours to choose.
Love the name of the cake, will have to give it a try.

  26. Thanks for the recipe. I love cake.

  27. Your first quilt is lovely and looking forward to the give away. Thanks Linda

  28. Still giggling over your "Inspiration" fabric story. In our household, DH does the cooking, too. He got tired of baked chicken and baked potatoes. You know the recipe where you put them in the oven for an hour, then lay on the couch to read until they are done:) Take care!

  29. What a nice reminder of early quilting "inspiration". What a jouney quilting has taken us on...thanks for the cake recipe.

  38. I can still remember my first quilt. My little sister got a doll, and a butterfly quilt that you could put the doll into the wings of the butterfly, It had a little house, and you could put the doll in the door of the house. I was about 16 when I made it for her.

  39. there's sure a lot of people up early today! sounds like a great cake recipe and the Revolution book looks interesting. Sure would be fun to try it with a new set of rulers!

  42. Wow! Now I'm going to have to have some of those rulers, and bake that cake.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I am new to IHAN, & I'm feeling comfy all ready!! Loved the story, sort of like when I went to the foot dr and he said I had a neuroma (sm tumor on foot) (I thought he said aroma) - so I politely told him if he took his shoes off, he would probably have an aroma also!!
Can't wait to get some rulers or maybe win them! Thanks for the recipe - recommended by Mrs McSteamy!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I giggled out loud at your "inspiration fabric" story! My mom has similar stories from when she was learning to quilt. Most of my "first quilt" stories just involve a seam ripper! hahah

  49. Hope to see the rulers at the AQS show in a couple weeks. Looks like a wonderful new invention. I had never seen your blog before and have it bookmarked to explore more. The Rotary Cutting Revolution looks interesting too. After all I come from the old school. Remember when cutters first came out? Oh my, will this thing work? Of course I had to buy one and WOW, hours taken off cutting out a quilt . My first quilt was done with cardboard templates (which you had to make another quite often as the tracing around wore the edges down) Note: it still isn't completed. Put a percale sheet behind it and it takes an act of God to get a needle through it. Might just have to dig it out and finish the quilting with my HQ-16.

  50. That sounds like a great name for a new line of fabric.... "Inspiration". Who doesn't need a little?

  53. Ooh, a cake recipe that I have all the ingredients for ... mmm ... and it's cold here ... might need to warm up the place a bit with a hot oven, and we can't let that heat be wasted, can we? Thanks for sharing! Oh, and the book looks neat, too LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I can vouch for the recipe. It's one of the first cake recipes that we tried after my daughter was diagnosed with an egg allergy. Want to make it even yummier? Use dark chocolate cocoa!

I've got to get my hands on one of these rulers soon...they sound really neat!

  63. Great post! I enjoyed the part about no "inspiration" fabric, lol. Now that sounds like me! As a child my grandmother use to tell us we couldn't mix prints and plaids...if you had a print shirt you had to have solid pants, you know that kind of thing. So now that I am learning to quilt, I have a terrible time figuring out what will go with what, you know, matching those prints (the ones I'm not suppose to put together. I know, I know....it's a mental thing and I'm trying to get around it, really I am!
I just LOVE Pat Sloan! Isn't she wonderful? So funny, and so energetic! She wears me out just reading her blog! Great blog today, I really enjoyed it!

Definitely try to make it for breakfast on Saturday when the whole family is family (husband and I have 5 children, 2 of whom are married and 1 granddaughter) Ah. I forgot ... My mother-in-law also visit us that day. I hope to have success with the recipe.Kisses from Buenos Aires-Argentina. Lily Bronstein
