Be My Valentine?

What does "Be My Valentine" mean for you?
Is it about romantic love in your world?
Do you celebrate?
Send cards?
The stitching is perfection....and the fabrics....perfect harmony to achieve an energetic flow.
Do you feel the energy flowing from the thread?
The back stitching is a bit tough to see in this pix....but if you look closely you can see it...fine, delicate and echoing the time and attention given to this design....it speaks volumes to me.

Who is included in your Valentine circle?

Do you celebrate as a family?

Yes, I really want to know.....what it means for you.....and I'll share what it means to me....

The love that was put into making the wall hanging Patsy made and sent to my mother while she was very ill.....that is the love I think about for Valentines Day.  Pure love and kindness....because as humans we are capable of such amazing opportunities to reach out and touch one another.... gently, kindly and with pure love.....and I believe the more we allow that gentle love to be expressed in our daily lives to everyone we come into contact with.....the more we can see that golden cord that connects us one to the next.

Now....ask Zach, the youngest co-worker and you'll hear all about  his experience:
Yes....he wore that hat to school yesterday.....oh my!
Valentines Day means getting little paper cards and sweet treats ....and of course a break from doing school work.

It's all about perspective and your vantage point.

Smiles,
Kelly

More Patsy Thompson Designs-Guest Post by my friend, Diane

Hopefully you have visited Gene's Blog and Marjorie's Blog to see what amazing creations they have made with Patsy Thompson Designs.  Make sure to leave the appropriate comments so you can be eligible to win a downloadable design from Patsy's website.  If you are a no-reply blogger, you can't be contacted if you win so make sure to include your e-mail address.

Today I have a guest blogger who has used Patsy's design Tulip Quartet Block to make a Tulip Tote Bag.   To be clear, this post is not part of the Patsy Thompson Design Blog Hop....I just wanted to give Diane an opportunity to share her thoughts and project.

Hi, I'm Diane and I'm a Patsy Thompson fan!  Not long ago our embroidery guild scheduled a class with Patsy to learn her technique for multiple hooping.  We made a beautiful wreath design on our embroidery machines.  Patsy uses a 'crosshair' design for multiple hooping, and I can tell you that really works for perfect placement in multiple hoopings. And get this - the crosshair design is FREE on Patsy's website under 'Education' and then 'Machine Embroidery'.  I have used the crosshair design in other projects as well.  Patsy's tutorials on the website are so detailed and user friendly, and fun to watch!  Patsy is a natural and her love of all things sewing/quilting/embroidery is evident in all she does.

I've had the pleasure of making her tulip totebag as well.  Literally every time I take it out in public women admire it and ask me where I got it or how they can make one.  I love it for the beautiful embroidery work and the bright, happy colors.
Close up photos of Tulip Quartet Block

Patsy has an eye for color that is enviable.  'Happy' just radiates from all she creates.  Besides being extremely talented and creative, she is wonderful as well.  If you have the opportunity, take a class from her!  If you want to create something you will really love, try her designs and projects.  Watching these designs stitch out is mesmerizing and the finished product is something you will love. I've also had the opportunity take a class with Patsy for her free motion quilting technique and I learned so much and had such a great time.  Patsy is a true pioneer in all she masters and her love of sharing her knowledge is present in all her videos and classes.
Diane

Thank you Diane for sharing your experience and insights with those of us who enjoy machine embroidery and quilting!

Be sure to stop by Jean Creates Blog tomorrow to see what she has made for the Patsy Thompson Designs Blog Hop.

Kicking Off the Patsy Thompson Designs Blog Hop

Happy Monday to ya and welcome to day 1 of the Patsy Thompson Designs Blog Hop.
Patsy has been so generous providing all of us who are participating in the hop designs to stitch out.  AND....there will be one winner chosen from each blog this week to select a downloadable machine embroidery design from Patsy Thompson Designs as well!!!!   How exciting is that?

Being an admirer of Patsy's work for years now, I have always wanted to be able to achieve a feathered wreath (one that actually looks like a feathered wreath and not a lopsided loopy mess).  My choice was a no brainer.... I choose the Majestic Feathered Wreath 1 & 2.
Perfect beautiful wreaths....yep.....I can now achieve the same results using my embroidery machine.

Earlier this year I visited Jinny Beyer's Studio and purchased some beautiful border fabric and a coordinating green fabric.  Our kitchen is green and I thought the border print below would make a lovely table runner.

Patsy's Majestic Feathered Wreathes on the black fabric and Jinny's border fabric on the outside.....how could I go wrong?

How many blocks did I make?  Twelve....yes...twelve!  Why?  I could not stop and I loved playing with different thread combinations.  And....well....there were those two blocks that I cut into while trimming the batting for a trapunto block (we wont' talk about that).  Patsy's designs are so much fun to play with and they are digitized very well.
I used Patsy's method of centering blocks.  She has posted a wonderful tutorial on her blog and you can read it HERE.  (If you are a video junkie like me, Patsy has lots of amazing videos that you can find HERE.)  You might notice I have double stitched each design (I just used the minus spool button and started each sequence again because I wanted the stitching to be a bit bolder).
Trapunto takes Patsy's wreathes into another realm all together.  They just pop right off of the piece squares.  The stabilizer and thread I used was by Floriani.

After stitching the blocks on 9 1/2 inch black fabric I decided that the blocks were too large proportionally given the border I wanted to use.  Given I own so many rulers I knew I was bound to have the perfect one for the job....and I was right.
This Creative Grids 8 1/2" Fussy Cut Ruler was just the ticket!  I just laid the ruler over the top of my blocks and centered it over my design and rotary cut away the excess.  I'm one who hates fiddling with rulers so this made my job uber easy.
See...nice and uniform 8 1/2" blocks.  Then I needed a ruler to cut the triangles I set in around the squares.  Yep...had one of those too :)
I have no clue as to how I acquired this ruler...but I sure was glad I had it because it made cutting those triangles and corners a breeze.  You can find one HERE.

Back to those amazing Wreaths!!!
The border fabric on the side was approximately 3 inches wide.  Somehow the border seemed too thin.  If I used the wider border print it might take the focus off the Feathered Wreaths.
What about using the wider border just on the ends?  That looks pretty good....or so I think.
Next I need backing, batting and a binding.
I got as far as cutting the batting and had the thought.....What about making this table runner reversible?  Since the Feathered Wreaths are so much fun to make I thought I could make one identical to this one using different fabrics and colors and have two table runners in one.  I have not decided just yet.  The quilting will be fun because I'm going to outline the Wreaths and they will pop even more.

Speaking of popping...check out these close ups:
You can really see that I used 2 layers of wool batting.

What a great time I've had using Patsy's designs and I am so GRATEFUL she has been so generous...THANK YOU PATSY!!!

There will be many more of Patsy's designs in my future :)  Would you like to see them in your future too?  Just leave a comment on this blog post telling me which of Patsy's designs you like best...you can find them by clicking HERE.  Did you know Patsy has recently added Pre-Cut Applique Shapes too?  You can see all of them HERE.

Would you like 5 extra chances to win?  Sign up for Patsy Thompson Designs Newsletter by clicking HERE.

Best of luck to everyone and be sure to stop at each of the blogs to increase your chances of winning.

I Just Want To Rock It

And I'm not talking about rocking a needle here....

After a night of watching the Voice....I just love that program....I would love for some people out there to put out a great program about middle aged women who can't sing and can dance like they do....but how we do........to get out there and grind it out.  That would be more fun than those folks with natural voice talent.  Don't you think they need to turn people like me into Rock Stars?  Now that, would be AMAZING and something worth watching.

Come on....vote for me....and naturally my girlfriends too, we'd be  in a  funky video that is fun and real....

Anyone know people who do programs?  Programs that like taking huge risks?

One slow dance with Blake Shelton....might kill me dead and fast....but...hey....us girls can sing and we have talent....and our friends would watch.

Can you imagine....Black Betty Bamb Ba Lamb A Lamb? or We Got Da Funk...We Got Da Funk?  or Robert Palmer and Addicted To Love....and instead of those girls with sheer tops we'd have our Featherweights out there....yep.....We're Addicted alright....it is Love too....but it is the love of the machine....and the machine of OUR choice....oh yeah baby....lets swing those hips...and swing in our swivel chairs ....right up to our machines.  Robert Palmer has noting on US....right?

Peter Gabriel....oh yeah..Sledgehammer......swing those hips girls....grind it out....cuz we would be flattening out our seams.....with our Sledgehammer....yeah....ay....He wants to be our honey bee....how about our bees wax to make our thread glide through our fabric?

Now I hear Survivor....Eye of the Tiger.....more like we are the TIGER and we have the EYES.....Rising up....our needles are up....we went the distance and we have the quilt.....it never happens too fast....don't loose your grip....you must fight just to keep them alive....rising up to keep them .....The Eye of The Tiger...Face to Face....do you remember.....my hips don't forget....I can still bop just like I did back in the day....and funny....I still think I'm cool when that song plays...I'm Rising up straight to the top, got the guts, got the glory.....its the eye of the tiger ....rising up .....The Eye of the Tiger....doesn't that sound like a fun quilt pattern to you?   It does to me.....

My Sherona....isn't that a new fabric line by MODA?   Give me some time Sherona....you make my mother run....My, My, My Sherona....

Hey....do it awwweeee...yaah...heay....I was a funky singer...playing in a band....everything around me yeah....got to feeling so low...I decided to disco down and listen to the show....Play that funky music white boy....I certain they were talking about a white featherweight....

Pardon me...but I thought Earth Wind and Fire was actually Aurifil Thread Colors....I"m dancing in the night....FMQ with Aurifil .....barh-dium dancing in September...never was a cloudy day.  I'm certain I know of what they speak. (I have no idea what the Bahdi-um was....but I doubt there were speaking of a barium enema so I just typed what I thought I heard back in the day)

I'm Bad, I'm Bad.....Get up off of that thing....James Brown....I know he has stepped on a sewing needle and he needed to Get up off of that thing.....if he shakes he feels better....oh yea baby.   I know I share a blood line some where with James Brown....it just has to be.....when he says, Good God....I can't even sit still....I start to shake....Funky....oh yea.  Do you think Kaffe and Brandon don't know about DA Funk?  They must...cuz their fabrics are definitely Funky.   I always dance and feel better :)

Superstition....play it Stevie....what a perfect name for a fabric line.....writings on the wall....come on you designers....get up on it....jam it out....boogie.....get your looking glass....stop with all the cutesie....get Funky.....get Superstitious....get Stevie Amazing.....wash your face and hands.....bite your bottom lip as you swing....keep me going strong....when you believe in things you don't understand.......play it.....create it.

Slide....on over to Isn't she Lovely.....and you know YES WE ARE....and always WERE.

Commodores....She's a Brick House.....that whistle....oh yeah....She's a Brick House....and that's my Bernina....easily glides over 8 layers of denim.....this is how the story goes...she's got every thing she needs ....she's a brick house....she's mighty mighty.   Ain't holding nothing' back!!!  Built like a Amazon....Built and knows how to please....she's a brick house....she's mighty mighty.  Shicka cow, shicka cow now.....Brick House.....all that Shika is her determination....feeds it like no other.

James Brown, Michael Jackson and Prince dance compilation....SEX Machine....Right on Right on ...Get Up Ah...Get on Up'ah....Heah..........I'm so sorry Ricky and Alex....but REALLY....I'd give my eye teeth to have been there that night.....ain't no body who can get down in that style....better than the invention of Velcro....it sticks to my soul.....I"m thinking this is as smoooooth as SILK......sexy silk....take em to the bridge....Just between you and Me....I think they were talking about some spanky quilting on silk.....Get On Up...Get Up Ah....Stay on the Scene....Like a Love Machine....Must be a Gammill they were dreamin' about that night.  Right On, Right On, Right On...Get UP Ah....shake your money maker....shake your money maker'ah.  Get up get on up....get up ah.  Now that's what I call a good time :)

James Brown and Papa's got a brand new bag.....I'm think he's talking about a Lazy Girl Bag...don't you?  Ain't no one who can make a bag like she can....Da Best Bag....she's gonna get on up'ah!

Herbie Handcock's Imagine.....loose yourself in the "imagine"....I drift off to amazing art quilts from the likes of The Three Sisters, Susan Brubaker Knapp and Paula Nadlestern.....I can see those 5 ladies boogie-ing down.....Imagine there are no countries....we are all one...nothing to kill or die for....just create, create, create.....imagine all the people living in peace....I hope someday you will join us and the world will be as one.  I just imagine the day I'll join them in a class and I'll feels as I've joined the one.....

Sly and the Family Stone....You can make it if you try.....yeah, yeah yeah....you can make it if you try.

Michael....no need to type his last name....Don't Stop Till You Get Enough.....Fever Rising Up....That makes it happen.....don't stop till you get enough.....I"m certain that man was talking about thread.   Touch me....and I feel
Touch Me And I Feel On Fire
Ain't Nothin' Like A Love Desire (Ooh)
I'm Melting (I'm Melting)
Like Hot Candle Wax Sensation (Ah Sensation)
Lovely Where We're At (Ooh)
So Let Love Take Us Through The Hours
I Won't Be Complanin'
'Cause This Is Love Power (Ooh)

I can't help but think that Patsy Thompson does her FMQing to this song....she just goes on and on and on....everything fresh and new....she doesn't stop till she gets it all......

I hope if you have lived on this planet during the times I have, and  that you remember these songs....cuz I can't help but love them and they bring me such joy.   Interweaving them into "my" reality brings  not only humor....but a "he double hockey sticks" of a lot of fun....

Hot down Summer in the City.....sing it Lovin' Spooful.....running up stars gonna meet you on the roof top.....in the city, in the summer in the city....sounds like some hot fabric from Hoffman Batiks doesn't it?

Ottis Redding is sitting in the morning sun, sittin'  when the evening comes ....watch them roll away  ....I'm think of Parson Gray....sittin' on the dock of the bay.....looks like nothing gonna change....everything remains the same.....resting my bones....Only difference is David is not wasting his time.....he's got all he needs to keep sailing on....

Nope....no pix....but just a lot of soul....and music I love intertwined with the other things I love....

I could probably do this all night long....but I'll stop to sleep....but before I do....I can not mention the Lady....

Lionel Richie and Kenny Rodgers.....Lady....

This song is for Lady Eleanor.....I waited so long to find a woman to emulate....one who was strong, kind, genuine.....and real......since they don't have songs about that kind of love...this one will have to do.....You are the love of my life....and I love you.....You are my Lady....my Lady Eleanor.  One of the most real Lady Quilters of all time!!!

If all those folks read the previous post and liked it....dang....I'll just keep on free flyin'.

Joyful and Happy Smiles,
Kelly
PS...It's late and I'm tired....so just pretend you don't see the type-o's and move to the groovin'

Where in the World is....

Patsy Thompson.....is she in Ohio, North Carolina, Texas, California???

I guess it depends on which day of the week it is!  Yep, Patsy does travel quite a bit so when I met up with a group of gals for a machine embroidery lesson yesterday, I was tickled to see Patsy in the flesh.

Patsy came to demonstrate her way of hooping projects or should I say....not hooping projects when she is creating her quilts.  There is a free download on her website, HERE, that is a guide for aligning your project no matter the orientation in the hoop.
Patsy is a non-traditional machine embroiderer and has made many of her own patterns.  She also encourages people to mix and match various designs and think about using them in different orientations to get different effects.

These are just some of the fantastic tips Patsy shared:
  • Stitch out an outline on a piece of stabilizer or muslin to test out the size you desire for your project
  • Keep that inventory of stitched out shapes so you can refer to them for a variety of projects.
  • Test stitch and move that piece under a piece of muslin to visually check how close or distant you like the design on your borders or blocks.
  • Take notes on your stitch outs to save time when stitching in future projects.

I know there was so much more but honestly I was not taking notes.  I can say one thing for sure and that is that Patsy loves...or should I say, LOVES her Babylock Embroidery Machines!  LOL  I should tease because I too love mine and they are the most intuitive and user friendly machines I've ever had the pleasure of using.  Brother machines are also very user friendly and made by the same people so I'm told.
Here is one of Patsy's you tube videos where she shares more about machine embroidery:

If you blink, you might miss Patsy....she is on the move.  Next week she'll be at the Road to California Quilters Conference  along with several other wonderful teachers I know including: Sarah Vedeler, Julie HermanLady Eleanor Burns, Edyta Sitar, and Cheryl Phillips.  There are a ton more teachers I just don't know all of them....yet :)  Plenty of friends are going as well so I hope everyone in Southern California actually knows how blessed they are to have so many womderful and inspiring people gathering for some quilting fun.

I'm on my way to PA today for my annual winter retreat with my girlfriends there.  I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and stay tuned for a tutorial from none other than my dear friend and machine embroidery expert (in my mind)  Karin :)

Smiles,
Kelly

Redesigning Perfect? Famore Cutlery Has

Just because I think all Famore Scissors are PERFECT doesn't mean the company isn't going to go and change something on me.
When I tried to re-order the Famore 6 inch Large Ring Comfort Handle Razor Edge Scissors I noticed they were out of stock.  WHAT?  Out of stock?  These scissors are a great seller and I really like the pair I have.

I called up Mr. Scissor Man, aka Brint, and asked him personally, "what have you done with my scissors?"
I learned the handles were re-designed to be slightly larger and a wee bit flexible for comfort.  Hmmmm...and I thought the previous design was GREAT!  (Personally, I never do understand why people update things.  After all, what is wrong with my 1970's hair do?)
The "re-designed" Famore 6 inch Large Ring Comfort Handle Razor Edge Scissors arrived in the mail yesterday and I had to give them some exercise.
Just as I suspected!  They still have the same sharp edges, cut excellently and have the same blue handles.  Did the handles have a scosche more room?  Yup they did.  OK, well....I guess the nuances of new handles have escaped me...OR... I've always been focused on the clean cuts I get with these scissors.
Conveniently enough I just so happen to have an opinion on these redesigned handles.   Imagine that!

The scissors are still razor sharp and give excellent crisp cut edges and the handles are and were comfortable for my hand....and since they went to all that trouble....why didn't they make them with screaming red handles instead?  After all, I like the color red better than blue :)

I'm finished now...zipped lips on this subject.

On to posting a few pix I have taken recently:
My girlfriend, Nancy, wore the cutest jeans...check out the mylar machine embroidery she put on the outside leg of her pants.  So stinkin' fun!  I need some fun pants.

Speaking of fun...another friend, Diane, took a class with Patsy Thompson and look what she made:
a lovely and cheerful tote
the back view and I just love it.

Lovely interior with lots of pockets....I'm jealous!

It's not like I can just hop up and go to classes and stitch with my buddies these days....AND.... I have been taking a few minutes to attempt some holiday gifts.
The girl who hates puckers....made a tea towel that has puckers :(

See what happens when I get the itch to make something and don't have access to all my supplies?  I knew better but just yearned to hear that machine hum along.

I know someone else who developed the itch and I'll publish her post tomorrow.

Until then.....keep smiling and I will too!

Kelly

Are You Hopping?

This is for all of you who were wondering where the music was on THIS post.

Now that I've got that straightened out....I have no idea where that video went after I embedded it.

Moving forward now:
Have you been hopping around checking out all the Machine Embroidery samples completed for the SewCalGal Fall Machine Embroidery Blog Hop?  If your answer is not a resounding YES, then I might suggest you get to hopping because there will be a winner chosen from each blog.

Mr. McSteamy brought up my embroidery machine and I was finally able to complete my project.  Here it is:
I made the Owl Scissor Keep using Floriani Stabilizer and Floriani Embroidery Thread.  I also used National Nonwoven Wool Felt and I think it came out pretty cute.  Next I'd like to make the Ice Cream Cone Scissor Keep.
Look how nicely my Dovo Embroidery Scissors fit into my Owl Scissor Keep.  Doesn't that Owl look very smart?  LOL  If you are just joining the hop then you'll want to know that the designer is Zandra Shaw from Embroider Shoppe.  In order to qualify to win a design of your choice you must leave a comment on THE OTHER POST - not here.

When I was looking for coordinating fabrics to go on the back of the Owl Scissor Keep I noticed I don't have many really fun and bright dots or stripes.....sooooo when I found the Michael Miller Happy Tones Fat Quarter Bundle I wanted to jump for joy!  But I didn't because I was not about to take any risks with my broken ankle.  In place of jumping for joy....I added them to IHAN®.  Check out these fun fabrics:

If these fabrics don't make you smile....then I suggest that you get a "rainbow enema" and call me in the morning...giggles.  You are looking at 30 reasons to smile right here in this one box.

Since breaking my ankle I have received several flower arrangements from family and friends.  I'm not saying I'm not deeply appreciative....I truly am.  At the same time...can I still say this Happy Tones Fat Quarter Bundle would have lasted longer and continued to bring joy for years to come.  If there is someone in your life that you would like to bring some joy and happiness to....think about sending them a Happy Tones Fat Quarter Bundle and I'd be happy to write the personalized note and ship it for you :)  I even put them on sale....and the holidays are right around the corner :)

I know the Flamingo lovers are wanting their updates.

The Flamingo Family celebrated Halloween in style this year.

They are also enjoying the Fall leaves.

Time to get to HOPPING....here is a reminder to leave a comment on each of these gal's blogs for your chance to win your choice of designs from the Embroider Shoppe.  Best of  luck to all of you!
