Hi Susan :)Oh I'm so excited to share with everyone a fun story about meeting Susan Brubaker Knapp. Last fall I went to Huston for Quilt Market. I was sitting on the sofa in the lobby of the hotel blogging (only free wi-fi and you know I'm frugal) along with several other folks who were using their laptops. As usual I struck up a conversation with some of the gals sitting around me and Susan happened to be one of them. I had absolutely no idea I was meeting such an incredibly talented woman. We exchanged business cards and I checked out her blog. Talk about feeling lucky.
When I decided to do this Anniversary Celebration 30 Days of Giveaways I wrote to Susan right away. I absolutely love her work and I had read about her Orchid Series Note Cards (photos of her work made into note cards) on her blog. She not only agreed to give a lucky IHAN blog reader a set of her Orchid Series Note Cards but she's giving them The Tulip Bag Pattern too!!!
Think I'm just embellishing the way I talk about people? Then check this out....who's work is splashed all over the cover of Quilting Arts Magazine?
Oh yea baby.....that would belong to none other than Susan Brubaker Knapp! See I was telling the truth and I was not embellishing the story one bit.....she really is incredibly talented :)
I asked Susan about what it is like to create, where does she begin and this was her reply:
Each piece is an emotional catharsis, and begins when I am filled with a strong emotion: awe at the beauty of nature, joy in nursing a baby, anger at an injustice. Art is my way of celebrating and documenting the deep mysteries of human beings’ relationships with each other, with our innate creativity, and with the natural world. Much of my work explores metamorphosis and transformation.
Susan speaks to Guilds and Teaches as well. I've not had the good fortune to take a class yet but if I get the opportunity I'm going for sure.Creating fiber art is an intense tactile experience. My core materials — cloth and thread — are the result of my background as a traditional quilter. But I also use substances foreign to traditional quilters, such as fabric paints and dyes, Tyvek, Angelina fibers and water-soluble pastels, to transform the cloth.
This is Susan's DVD, Free-motion Stitching and Thread Sketching, it is available at the Interweave Store. I have found DVD's have been a great resource because I'm a visual learner and I'm not a fast learner so I can take my time and review the material over and over.
There is no requirement to follow Susan's blog, but you may be very glad you did because she shares great information and inspiration.

I do believe that over the last two years that Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville.com has been the most influential/inspirational on my personal quilting journey. Her classes are more about a concept that she lives and practices through her quilts. Not all quilts are meant to be judged and I love a more relaxed way of viewing quilting because of her. I would love to win the Tulip bag pattern and the note cards. What a wonderful artist Susan is.
ReplyDeleteI once had a chance meeting with a local quilt designer I adored. I loved everything I had seen of hers and one day I ran into her at a quilt shop and we were visiting and soon I realized how she creates her masterpieces. I couldn't believe I had met her or learned how she designed. I felt so fortunate to meet her as she died of a sudden heart attack less than a month later. I will always remember that chance meeting.

ReplyDeleteI'm like that, I end up in conversations with strangers everywhere I go and everyone of them is special, how's that for diplomacy? None of my strangers have been as famous as yours, but some have been pretty creative.
ReplyDeleteMy best 'just by chance' meeting was with a colleage in an elevator on our way to our hotel rooms in the evening after a meeting. We instead went for a lovely walk, began to correspond, and were married about a year later. That was the best 'chance' meeting of my life!! Kathie L in Allentown
ReplyDeleteKathryn's story beats all. It seems where ever I go, I meet people who connect with my tiny town in Utah. It amazes me how many people have heard of my town and surrounding area of 5,000 people.
ReplyDeleteBut my most favorite is a bus ride in college on a geology field trip to Yellowstone. My roomie started up a conversation with his roomie, so we traded places and I spent the rest of the ride with Keith. We just connected and had the neatest, most magical time together.

About a year ago I went to get my hair cut, but my hairdresser had a "substitute" that day. After 2 hours and a fantastic new 'do, Terri and I were on our way to becoming inseparable friends! She's an extraordinary artistic woman who continually encourages me to be creative!

I'm not of the 'noble' variety either. One of my kids shook hands with Dick Chaney and another with the Prime Minister of Canada Jean Cretien when he was in power...so my meetings by chance are through my kids! I live alot through my kids!

I was in Fanueil Hall in Boston, the family taking a vacation and shopping with my sister-in-law when lo and behold, who is shopping with his family. Forrest Whitaker! Nice family...my sister-in-law talked his and his wife's leg off! Chance meetings are such surprises and delights...little bonuses in the game of life!

When I started blogging last year I tried to get to know people in my province. I started communicating with a woman and blogging a lot with her. One of the shop owners was telling me about someone I just had to meet and it turned out to be the same woman. On top of that, it turns out she lives 2 minutes from my house. We are now in a bee together and she inspires me greatly.

ReplyDeleteI met someone recently at a large gathering. We had both worked for the same person but at different times. It was fun to tell stories and compare notes!
ReplyDeleteI do not believe we meet by chance. There is a purpose behind everyone who gets "thrown" our way. That being said, my BFF and I met through the church nursery. She was one of the workers and I had my lil goose in nursery.(She's 3 now:). But we really got to know one another through a Ladies Ministry class at church called "Apples of Gold" Turns out we are both single mom's with a lot of the same health issues. Amazing how God brings people together!! She's the only person I know who totally gets what I go through 'cause SHE does too! Thanks for the awesome giveaways!!!
ReplyDeleteBack 10 years ago when my son was in cub scouts I was at a meeting,instead of my husband, talking with a group of people. One of the ladies mentioned where she just moved to and I was so excited I hugged her and said welcome to the neighborhood I live a few doors down. We became best friends and have been ever since. I signed up to follow Susan's blog - yes she is extremely talented, luv the pattern and cards!! You really must stop introducing any more blogs, I lost count of how many are now in my reader!!

ReplyDeleteI just love the tulip bag pattern, Someone special who I met by chance. There was a church sale that we went to and when entering the building I was drawn to a table on my right. There was lots of fabric and the man behind the table didn't have a clue as to the prices. His wife showed up, made me a great deal on all the fabric, gave me tons of quilting advice. to her my stopping by was a sign, she was clearing out a sewing room for a foster child she might get, for me, I got lots of fabric for my charity quilts at a very reasonable rate. A win win for both of us, and I never got her name.
ReplyDeleteI have met a blogger that i follow at a fabric store. Turns out that she works there and I won a giveaway she had! I won some fabric and turned it into a pretty lapquilt that I got to send my Grandmother to cuddle with after my grandfather died.
ReplyDeleteMy someone special doesn't relate to quilting at all. I met Dennis while waiting for a bus (I use public transportation a lot). Just one of those spur-of-the-moment chats to pass the time. I can't say we've become close friends, but he does impact my life. He always seems genuinely happy to see me, and stops to ask how I am doing and introduces me to whoever he is with as if I am a very special friend. I watch for him whenever I am out and about because he always brings a ray of sunshine to my day. Thanks, Dennis :)

ReplyDeleteHmmm, who have I met accidentally that has come to mean alot to me? The one that comes to mind first is my friend Kindra. I met her while I was setting up a daycare business and she had just moved to town. She took my name and called me later about daycare. To this day she's one of my best friends! She's moved a few times in the 17 years we've known each other but we still email and get together every 3-6 months when she flies in to see her son who is attending the university in my town! Great friend, good times! I'm glad you met Susan. I'm off now to check out her blog!
ReplyDeleteI am often shy when it comes to meeting people for the first time. But about 10 years ago (kind of like SewLindAnn) I was helping at a conference and worked side by side with a lady from Ohio. She was such an inspiration to me, as she was very creative and made things happen with little or no preparation. We have become BFF,even though she lives in Ohio and I live in Florida. I have met some famous people before, but you asked for someone special, and she is more special then anyone that is famous :-)

Yes, he knows how to sew (has 2 machines), knows how to quilt and even knows how to crochet. It doesn't get any better than that. Except to win the Tulip Bag!!

I met a couple at a college fair I was working for my job; they were at the next table. That was about 30 years ago - We have visited back and forth, and are still in touch a couple times a month. Milt and Maryanne - good friends.

I met a wonderful man and had a great two year relationship. I literally bumped into him when I wasn't looking where I was going. We are each happily married to other people now but I remember him fondly.
ReplyDeleteI met another mom at the park while our kids played together. Come to find out we had a common friend and laughed at the fact we have never met. The more we talked the more learned we had a lot in common. We lived just a few blocks from eachother, we both homeschool and we both like to create. We quickly became great friends.

Well, I would have to say that I just happened to stumble into a conversation where a mini group in my guild was looking for a few new members. I was invited to join them and it has really changed my quilting. I have really been inspired by these talented women and I have tried and learned new techniques and especially gained the courage to try anything. Definitely a lucky day for me!

She was a principal looking for a teacher and at that time, I was a teacher looking for a position. You never know! Susan's work is really, really fabulous. ReplyDeleteOne of my dear friends became a friend by a chance meeting. She was hired as my substitute when I took leave to have a baby. That was 19 years ago and we are still friends. She helped me at my school. The next year, we helped her secure a position at another school. Thanks for reminding me of this great chance meeting!

I my my husband online...I had just broken up with my boyfriend, and was taking dancing lessons...I was chatting with my "now" husband online because we had things and places in common but had never crossed paths. I decided I would ask him if he would like to come and be my dance partner so I could continue lessons...I though, it's just dance lessons...who knew by chance we would hit it off! 9 years later, and have 2 beautiful girls that we are fostering to adopt, and a wonderful life together being older parents!
ReplyDeleteI once ran into one of my first cousins in an Omaha antique store. I live about 3 hours west of Omaha and she lives another 3 hours west of me. Neither of us knew the other was going to be in Omaha. Was a great chance meeting.
ReplyDeleteI am a faithful reader of Susan's blog. Her work is absolutely wonderful. It would be great to win the pattern and cards in the drawing.
When I go to my husband's home town to visit his family I usually spend some time with a family friend of theirs who is a quilter. She introduces me to any new quilt stores, shows me what she's working on and often shares her knowledge and sometimes some fabric with me. She's inspirational, but not really a chance meeting. Last time I was there, this past January, she took me to a guild meeting. I was impressed as our local guild doesn't do a lot. One of the things that impressed me the most and the "chance encounter" was the two hearing impaired women who attended. They weren't guild members but came to check it out as they are quilters and interested in joining the guild. They brought a machine that the speakers could speak into that transmitted the speech to them in a way they could hear. The speakers kept forgetting to get the machine, or held it close, or left it on the table when they got up to show things, not on purpose but because no one was used to using the machine. These two women were lovely and gracious and didn't make any complaints. after the meeting as they and I, as the guests, were being shown the library, I got to "talk" to them and they said they thought they would join the guild. such courage and grace inspires me.
ReplyDeleteWhile in Atlantic City in 1974 for a Steelworkers Convention my husband and I got on an elevator and started down to the lobby. When the elevator stopped at the next floor Red Skelton stepped onto the elevator. You could have knocked us over with a feather. My husband and I still talk about meeting one of the great comedians of all time.

ReplyDeleteI met accidentally my best friend, we both attented a class and that day all the college had a meeting with all the teachers, the students were outside the building, then she came and we started to talk, before that day I thought she was a superflous girl and in-fashion, but I was so wrong, she's so humble, and lovely person, it has been about 10 years ago, she's pregnant right now, I'm so happy for her, the baby's coming to their lives after 14 years of marriage :)!

One day while shopping in a craft store about 75 miles from my home, I met the owner, who took a special interest in my work and what I was doing. The result was a friendship that's lasted for years, the opportunity to teach classes and sell my work, and being part of an art club that gave me a number of new and very talented friends.

ReplyDeleteChance meetings...hmmm...Colonel Sanders (of KFC fame) was at an airport I was going through when I was a little girl.
And, when I was a nursing student, a doctor in an elevator said, "Hey, don't I know you" and I didn't recognize him, but found out who he was...the doctor who DELIVED me! I look a bit like my mom and assume he must have thought he was younger than he really was.

ReplyDeleteTo enter McKennas giveaway. I began quilting as therapy and a way to socialize with others (I took a Com Ed class to learn how)after the death of my son and to emerge from my depression. It started with wanting to make quilts from his shirts for my family members (especially the granchildren) as keepsakes and memories. My efforts have grown, I'm addicted to quilting, books, patterns, and fabric, much to the consternation of my husband. I think of Frank with EVERY quilt i do--whether it is planning, cutting, piecing,binding, or giving. This endeavor has helped me tremendously to heal and to remember without falling apart. It has also provided special people with special mementos. I am also working on planning a quilt block for the Organ Donor National Quilt, in memory of my son. He was also an organ donor.
It sounds far fetched, but I met my husband by chance. We were both in a support group for people going through divorce and I introduced myself to the group by saying I would never get married again. Well, we met for coffee after a few months, and married four years later! We'll be married twenty years in October and every year is even better than the one before!

ReplyDeleteHmm...someone special that I met just by chance. Well, 21 years ago I met a man who is now the significant other in my life. He was just the friend of my roommate at the time while I was in college. And then we reconnected on Facebook last spring. He's pretty special to me.

ReplyDeletemy "chance" meeting was an Indiana Pacer, Jim Stepanapahdadkahfjkl-can't remember his last name, and he never made it big. Anyway, I was working in the same building where the Pacers offices were and I got on an elevator with this giant, and told him he should be a basketball player! It wasn't until later that night while watching the 11 pm news that I heard Jim Stepanapsdfalk;dsjf; signed with the Pacers that day!!haha! What did I know, I am not a sports fan!
ReplyDeleteKelly...I'm blogging from the hotel lobby-they charge $10 per day for wifi in the rooms!!!! Crazy!!!! Especially when I can come to the lobby in the morning and get FREE donuts and coffee!!!

ReplyDeleteThis post and your prompt for us to write about someone special we have met got me thinking and soon my mind was wandering about all the amazing people that have been in my life. And it saddens me that some have moved on and we just don;t travel the same paths any longer.
ReplyDeleteOne of the most special women in my life is my mother-in-law. She is creative and humble and very generous. I am blessed to have married her son.
As a former military wife, I met so many people over the years.... but there was always a special zing when I met another quilter at a stuffy function, like Carol.

I met, Nicole through an embroidery sale post that she had listed on Yahoo. Her and I started discussing the different crafts that we enjoy, and it appeared that whatever her 'crafty' strengths were, that was my weakness and vice versa. That was 3 years ago. Her and I converse via email and share our quilts, embroidery, fabric painting or whatever we're doing at the moment and we have become very good friends. We also make it a point to send one another gifts in the mail about every other month. Nicole has certainly brightened my life with her talents, laughter and friendship. I already follow Susan's blog and I'm in awe of her work. I met a bunch of great bloggers by chance -- I wanted to make a string quilt, so I googled that, and now my quiltmaking is influenced by Bonnie Hunter and Tonya Ricucci and Gwen Marston and Freddie Moran. I haven't really met these women, but they've changed the way I make quilts. thanks for the chance to win.

I have met lots of great quilting friends who inspire me all the time through my blog. Just by chance, they wandered over to my blog or I wandered over to theirs and we started corresponding. They as a collective group have had a great impact on my motivation and my work! And, I love Susan's blog. She is an amazing quilter and I love what she shows.
ReplyDeleteOne day, I was having a particularily bad day, everything going wrong and bad news received, when I stopped into the bank. I was being crabby with the teller, which is something I NEVER do when she reached across the opening and placed her hand on my arm, looked me in the eye and said "everything is going to be all right." I don't know her name, but that day she was a super star. She was so kind to me and it meant the whole world at that moment. Just her act of kindness made me feel like I wasn't alone. I thanked and apologized profusley. It was a wonderful raok and I have been trying to pass it along where ever and when ever I can.
ReplyDeleteI had gone to NYC to a funeral and had not been there in years and years. Needless to say I took the wrong subway...got on the wrong bus...and was very lost and in fear of missing the funeral. I looked up on this busy busy street and there was my cousin. He was running down the street trying to get there on time...He knew where he was going....I yelled out and he got me there on time....

ReplyDeleteI met a lovely lady last year at a Christmas gathering. I went by myself and she made me feel so welcomed and loved even though we had just met. I think I will go send her an email right now.
